We are local and were excited to try Thai Basil under its new ownership and grab some sushi. We visited on June 28th at 11:00 AM, right when they opened. It was just my wife, our toddler, and me. We ordered promptly—because, as any parent knows, eating with a toddler is a race against time.

We ordered a kids’ chicken fried rice, a Mango Roll, a Country Boy Roll, and a spicy squid salad to share. The fried rice came out quickly (around 11:08 AM), which was great. The squid salad followed shortly after. But no one warned us that the sushi would take an extremely long time.

By 11:48 AM—nearly 50 minutes later—we still had no sushi, and our toddler was understandably done. I went inside to ask for the food to go. The server said, “The rice just got cooked—it’ll be out soon.” I said we still needed to leave and asked for the check and a to-go box. I loaded our toddler into the car and came back to find my wife finally receiving the food a little before noon.

The waitress apologized, saying, “Sorry, we just got the rice cooked. We use leftover rice for the fried rice and cook new rice for the sushi.” Honestly, even if that’s the norm, no one wants to hear that their child just ate leftover food. If you’re opening at 11:00 AM, the kitchen should be ready to serve what’s on the menu—or at least warn customers of a long wait.

Finally, when we got home, we discovered they’d included a roll we didn’t order—and charged us for it. I went back, returned the roll, and was given $15 cash.

Unfortunately, this was a terrible experience. I had left a positive review here in the past, but I can’t recommend this place anymore. I would welcome a conversation with...

Beautiful restaurant, food and service just ok and they don’t split checks for more than 2 people. Came with a group of 10, our server didn’t seem too enthusiastic about that for some reason lol. One of my friends with us used to be a server and she said maybe the kitchen gives him a hard time when it’s big groups, so his mood may be from thinking what he may have to deal with in the kitchen 😕.

I ordered a fresh basil roll, Thai iced tea and green curry tofu. The fresh basil roll was really fresh, the sauces were just eh so when we passed the plate around to share most people skipped the sauce. The Thai iced tea was perfect, not too sweet. The green curry was just ok. More spicy than flavorful and wasn’t particularly aromatic either. I got to taste my friends siracha noodles and those were REALLY good, surprisingly sweet and barely spicy. I also got to taste my other friends tumeric curry with tofu. That was ok and she ended up giving me the rest to take home because she thought it was bland and said she wouldn’t eat her leftovers. I wanted to order the sweet mango sticky rice but they didn’t have mangos 😕.

It was a nice lunch during our herbalism apprenticeship break in Black Mountain, but it wasn’t the best Thai I’ve had in the area. Oh and if you come with a group bring cash because they don’t split checks of more than...

I was very excited getting a door dash order so I could do some recon before I had a chance to eat there. Received a doordash order and arrived at 725 for a 732 pickup. Upon arrival was told 5 minutes. Several times I was told 5 minutes upon asking. At 745 I’m guessing a female manager told me 5 to 10 more minutes. After 10 more minutes still no answer. I watched delivery orders come out that were called on and placed after mine. There seemed to be much confusion as some of the workers didn’t know if orders with receipts had or had not been paid for. Confusion on orders with people with the same name for pick up and dining in. Observed a lot of Chaos and I watched the kitchen and saw no clear direction or in the words of Chef Ramsey who is expediting. They cost me money and I didn’t even get to taste the food. Definitely changes my excitement of eating there…..Finally got my...

I've been up here volunteering with the cleanup and have been looking forward to the opportunity to try this place. Unfortunately the visit didn't turn out as well as I had hoped. I ordered the pho soup which I have had many times in the past. When it came out it looked good but it was really bland so I requested some sauce for additional flavour. Being a Thai restaurant I expected some fish sauce or at least some chilli sauce but was provided simply soy sauce. The portablla mushrooms were so tough I couldn't chew them. My beverage was never refilled and actually had no service without having wave down servers. At checkout I informed the people at the register that food was not good and was was laughed at and obviously charged full price of almost $22.00 for a single lunch. I would not recommend this location.

(picture is from my previous review, I miss how great the food used to be) Updating my review after Thai Basil has reopened. We got take out last week and ordering was confusing. The business profile number needs to be updated, and the number on the website seems to be someone's personal cell. The order feature through the business profile also doesn't work. After using the ordering feature on the website, it was unclear when the food would be ready. The food was good, but not as good as the "old Thai Basil." Prices also seem to have stayed the same while portions have shrunk. Hopefully some of the kinks get worked out as they haven't been open for very long. Still glad to have a Thai restaurant in Black Mountain!
