Morning Sky Pottery — Local services in Black Mountain

A friend sent me a beautiful mug, custom made by Mathilda, for my birthday several years ago and I've been purchasing pottery from her ever since. I have commissioned several pieces from Mathilda and I know I can always count on her for a unique gift item, or even just a gift-to-self. I once had her create her take on a sugar bowl my grandmother had in her kitchen... it was one I wanted, and it disappeared when she died, so I wanted to have something that was a reminder of her, if not that very thing. I sent Mathilda a photo of that very sugar bowl and she did NOT disappoint! It was not an exact replica, mind you, as the original piece was a collector piece and a copy would have been uncool on multiple levels. Mathilda is my go-to potter every time. I stumbled into Mathilda’s shop about 5 years ago while I was in town for a conference. I’d been shopping for a very specific DIVA mug for a bestie who’d had her beloved mug stolen at work. Mathilda told me she didn’t have anything like I was looking for (generic stamped text), but that she could hand carve something for me! Not only did she design a beautiful mug for my friend, but she even carved her name in the bottom so it hopefully wouldn’t get stolen again! She took care of everything with shipping, let me write a note to include with the package and sent me pictures before it shipped out. My friend and I were both so touched and pleased that we’ve been customers ever since. I have purchased at least one piece every summer since. We absolutely love Morning Sky and have from the first time we visited. On our first visit we had the opportunity to meet the exceptionally talented Mathilda! My friend and I had 3 curious boys in tow. Mathilda answered all of their questions and graciously entertained their curiosities. Since that first visit I have purchased several beautiful pieces and couldn’t be happier. These pieces are used by my family daily.
