These were amazing. I woke up fairly early on a Monday morning and felt a donut hankering, so I wandered over to Kane's to grab some for me and my top-tier chum who literally went to the school of hospitality. We were staying near Boston Common, so this ended up being about a 10- to 15-minute walk through what I'm assuming is the Boston equivalent of NYC's Financial District. It was probably around 7ish but you could see a few early birds coming in to start the week, and it didn't seem as gritty/dirty as its Manhattan counterpart. Kane's was easy to spot. The interior space is relatively small; this is a to-go establishment, with nothing that I saw in the way of seating. Despite it being primo donut time in my view, there was only one or two other customers in there at the time and I was waited on promptly.
I opted for a half dozen donuts. I'd done a bit of research beforehand and knew the honey glaze was a big seller, so that was procured. For my own personal enjoyment, I went with one of my faves, maple/bacon, as well as a strawberry frosted. Morally (when in Rome) I also purchased the Boston Cream and two other frosted options, including a Celtics-themed one.
My donuts were excellent. The flavor was perfect, and the density was right on the money. I don't like a donut that's TOO airy/light (similar to a mochi donut, which is starting to gain steam in my neck of the woods) and I'm not crazy about super heavy, cakey donuts. These were just right, and very decent sizes for the price. I also liked that the bacon was broken down into bits (I've encountered a few of these with giant slabs of bacon), which made it easier to munch on. My chum gave the rest top marks, and also confirmed they had some staying power - they survived the trip back home and contributed to her caloric intake the subsequent day, still fairly fresh apparently. I've made the mistake of going into Dunkin Donuts after 2PM and the same-day donut situation is rough and way too crunchy. Not a problem here at all.
The service was also top-notch. The fellow behind the counter was very friendly, helpful and patient (standing stoically by as I hemmed and hawed over my options). Everyone I interacted with was in a pleasant mood, despite it being Monday morning, the darkest of times.
Huge recommend and would absolutely stop by if I'm in a situation again where I need to require early morning sustenance...
Read moreKane’s is a must visit for donut lovers. I’d put Kane’s on the same level as another world class donut shop: The Rolling Donut in Dublin, Ireland. Seems crazy to reference a place so far away, but you have your elite donut makers like Krispy Kreme, The Holy Donut, HiGi Donuts, etc. Then you have your average donuts like Dunkin’, Starbucks, grocery stores, and even many local shops claiming to make donuts, but it’s a hobby.
But among the elite donut makers, Kane’s & The Rolling Donut always stand out. The Rolling Donut has a recipe that is slightly smaller, less sweet, and a pinch cheaper. That said, Kane’s hits the mark on size, sweetness, price, and overall consistent quality made with care. Try a specialty donut whenever you can as one of your choices. You shouldn’t buy just one donut when you visit anyway. They move customers through quickly, the staff are kind, and whatever you do: DO NOT MISS A CHANCE TO VISIT. credit, cash for payment with tap, boxes or bags for to-go. The coffee is solid to pair. Cruellers are made Fridays, and sometimes on weekends if the chef has time. Their dough is totally unique and is effectively making a whole different batch for just one donut. Thank you Kane’s for never disappointing. The honey jelly is incredible in my books of too many jelly donuts...
Read moreAs far as donuts in the Financial District go, you will struggle to find better. When you walk into the small store, you will instantly be teleported to a time when sweets and candy was all people thought about. The beautiful aroma of confectioners sugar, frosting, sprinkles, and the fried deliciousness that is donut dough fills the air.
The donuts are American sized portions, often costing close to the higher range for gourmet breakfast pastries. They also have gluten free options available, but it is important to note, these gluten free donuts are made in a facility that processes wheat and a whole lot of other allergens. For this reason, it might be difficult to send a Celiac there.
However, for those who enjoy all of the glutens, there is also a nitro-brew coffee tap there for your enjoyment. Go, experience all of the different flavors and the more recent trendy development of nitro-brew, a good experience should be expected by all!
One note, the original Kane's is located somewhere north of Boston, to get the full experience, please check out where the location is online, and travel there for even more access to...
