We came here with our expectations tempered by previous reviews. Our experience was mixed, with some highs and lows and a few, "meh"s.
We went here for dinner, but during happy hour. There were not many people when we entered, but plenty more when we left.
We sampled quite a few things. Our appetizers were the Curry Puffs and the Golden Triangles. My wife ordered the Pad Kee Moa (Drunken Noodles). I got the Pad Thai and a couple sushi rolls. We also each ordered a glass of the Conundrum white wine.
For the sushi, we had the Poipu Roll for something new and the spider roll for something known. The Poipu roll had an interesting finish due to the macadamia nuts. The spider roll was pretty standard. Generally, the sushi was not the best. Think supermarket-level and you probably have the right idea: a bit too dry, pieces a bit small and nothing special. Not bad, but pretty underwhelming. I'm a big fan of sushi and love it when it's great, and still like it when it's so-so. This was better than the latter. But even at the happy hour special price, I can't recommend it.
The entrees were a different story. We were asked how spicy we would like them. The Drunken Noodles were ordered "medium" and the Pad Thai "hot". Both were pretty hot, with not a lot of room between them. If you like hot stuff, you might try ordering "Thai hot", which is what I'll do next time. But not bad at all!
Both entrees were finished completely and we enjoyed them. They did get a bit greasy toward the end, but I would recommend either of the entrees we ordered.
The last thing to arrive were the appetizers. Both the Curry Puffs and the Golden Triangles were really good, with the Curry Puffs being the standout.
So, yes, the appetizers arrived last. And really, the service was fairly uneven. We were greeted and seated immediately on entering. We had very good service until more tables filled. At this point, it became clear they were understaffed. Our waitress picked up another table, and another, and another. She was not idle. But there were too many tables for her. So it took her a bit of time to get back to us. More of a management issue than a reflection on our server.
I think this can be a good choice if you know what to order and what to avoid. Specifically, don't get the sushi.
Oh, the standout for the evening was the Conundrum wine. Delicious.
Update: Our second visit was not an improvement. On being seated, we waited for 10 minutes before anyone showed up to our table. This is while three hosts stood at the host area and talked.
When we finally got service it had a quick turn around, and then there was a long gap before our server returned. We noticed that the table beside us had the same issue.
The food also seemed to have taken a turn for the worse. Our tofu appetizer was more grease than tofu. Neither of our main courses was seasoned well and both milder than we ordered.
Generally, the restaurant doesn't seem to be improving. I'm hoping that they figure out how to turn...
Read moreStay Away!!! This place is disgusting. I never take the time to review restaurants, however I had no choice here.
First, the bathroom was filthy. No soap In dispenser. Door handle looked as though it had not been cleaned in years. Urine all over the floor accompanied with wet toilet paper at toilet base.
The edamame came out with this sweet sauce that was beyond sickening.
We ordered a house salad and it came out wilted and brown. Rabbits would not of even eaten this slop. They served two different dressings on a petri dish that weren’t enough for the salad. We had to mix it ourselves. The dressing was horrible. There was so much fill salad and it was overflowing on the small plate. We couldn’t even mix the dressing and if he wanted to. Horrible presentation.
We then ordered a dish - we both were very clear that we did not want any spice and please send the spice on the side.
When the dish arrived, we could not even eat it. My wife typically orders between 9 and 10 as far as the hot ratios. Her eyes were watering and she could not even enjoy her meal while me and the other hand, I took three bites, and was gasping for air and water.
Then we get it sometimes things happen. Maybe the chef didn’t get the memo. Of course, the server was nowhere to be found and I had to ask the hostess to please bring me some water not only was our hostess snippy. She had an attitude from the get-go.
I asked for the manager to explain that we specifically asked for no spice, and this dish was layered in hot red pepper. He looked at us and said oh “you eat half and you no pay.” we begin to explain to him that we ordered one to share. A portion in the dish remaining was left there because I took two bites and couldn’t take it anymore. Both him and the waitress insinuated that we were lying and trying to get out of paying.
This has nothing to do with payment. At the end of the day, I paid for the entire dish. Regardless, the was a food horrible, the service was worse. Although the place decent atmosphere. That’s all is going for it. The manager is a complete jackass. And has zero customer skills. And the remaining staff was equally as rude.
We happen to be in the trolley the next day, and there was a tour guide, recommending restaurants to other patrons and as we drove by that restaurant, we overheard her say don’t go there this place is really bad. Of course we chimed in and told our story.
In closing, the place is dirty, the presentation is very bad, the the food was beyond horrible, the customer service beyond bad. I would stay far away from this place. We had a great experience at Mi Casa if you like Mexican food. Amazing staff and food.
Places such as “Happy Bowl” are far from happy and should be boycotted as they do not deserve to be in business for a host of reasons.
When you see this place run!!!! Horrible experience on...
Read moreWe hope that the average for this place goes up as this restaurant claws its way out of the negative publicity it has created for itself in the first few months of existence (largely due to its service staff).
We gave this place a rating of 4-stars, and here is why:
we are Breckenridge locals, and really wanted to see past the bad reviews when we visited this place for the first time today. Being small business owners ourselves, we realize that your employees represent 100% of your business, and TRUST US - it is so difficult to find decent workforce in this mountain town the food was good, and the prices were what you'd expect in a resort town the atmosphere was decent our waiter, Jack, was EXCELLENT! Without knowing it, he literally raised our review by two stars. At the very least. It was a great pleasure to have such a great service, especially after anticipating the worst.
So why the 4-star instead of 5? Well, the greeter girls were TERRIBLE. First, we couldn't understand half the things they said because they spoke broken English. Then, we were told that the wait was 15-20 min. We were sitting right in front of them for over 40 minutes, and THEY FORGOT TO CALL US from their wait list, giving our table away FOUR times! Yes - I actually looked at their notepad. It was quite ridiculous. And all the hostess said when my husband (and later, I personally) asked her about getting a table was: "I'm so sorry, I totally forgot! I promise next table will be yours". Well, heck! Yea, it better be! So, they lost major points for it. But again, - not fully restaurant's fault. I bet it's tough to get anyone in this town to work as a host.
Lastly, we wanted to make reservations, and the phone number listed on their website was out of service / disconnected. We weren't even sure if the place was in business. The only reason we went was our curiosity and genuine desire to experience the place for ourselves.
Overall... We would definitely go back because the food was solid. Hopefully, we can make reservations ahead of time, or just go before the rush hour to avoid dealing with the hostesses.. And we will absolutely request Jack to be our...
