KNOCK your socks OFF..
There are some spots in the province of Boise’s small downtown district where one might find a critical mass of citizens, in full celebratory mode. Indulging in drink after drink, these Veruca Salts and Augustus Gloops form a heated, loud, somewhat unpleasant crowd that’s not a little dangerous, but mostly to itself. This explains the district's heavy weekend police presence.
Then there is Pengilly Saloon. It attracts a wiser, groovier clientele that is at once laid-back and ready to rock. The staff is impeccably congenial and hard-working on your behalf. The joint has the vibe of Old West Meets The Hacienda. Its main attraction of course, is the music stage, where on any given night you can find a well-selected prize band performing for you. Please help make it worth their while by tipping. Everyone here deserves big tips.
Shout out to Friday night 'house band' : Sean Hatton & Company for keeping the spirit alive.
Other attractions: an affordable pool table; a patio for some chilling out. ,,,,,
To operate a saloon these days requires one to be part nostalgist, part optimist. I am keen to seek out the owner and...
Read moreThe bar scene in Boise can be a little crazy, but being over 40, Pengilly is a great bar. Sure there are plenty of younger people, but they are younger adults so the place has a good mix of young and older adults. There is a variety of music and one of the new owners (Curtis Steigers) shows up to play with the likes of Ned Evett and Bill Coffey (Ned reminds me of Jimmy Hendrix and Bill reminds me of Neil Young - you would not think that would be a good mix, but they are great together).
Anyway, even though I am a smoker, smoking is not allowed in the bar and that is another great thing. Sure, sure, sure, I do not think smoking should be prohibited by law, but I do go to bars that do not allow smoking as their own choice.
The bar tender seems very good and their wait staff is very good as well. They used to have the best waitress in town and I do not know why she left after the new owners bought the place, but I keep hoping she will come back some day.
Pengilly is a great bar for adults to listen to local musicians. I only wish the place were bigger because sometimes, like when Ned and Bill plan, the place can...
Read moreWhat a horrible place to go. I walked in with my father late last night to grab a quick drink. While we stood at the bar to order, this drunk old man comes up to my right side and starts slapping me on my broken right hand (which has a cast on it), belligerently going off on me about how I was carrying a bottle of soda from Pie Hole. So I asked him what his problem was and why he insisted on slapping my cast and he yells "I don't give a f* about your broken hand while he waved his pool stick at us as if he wanted to fight. Then unbelievably the bartender and the door guy told US to leave. I couldn't believe it. I still can't. Apparently they cater to the low life's who spend their nights there getting drunk every day of the week and have no respect whatsoever for anyone else. I've never seen anything like this I'm still amazed at how we were treated just because we weren't "regulars." Do yourself a favor and don't bother going here unless you're in the mood to be...
