I've lived and worked in Deadwood for 15 years, and I've seen a lot of new restaurants come and go - mostly go. Almost all of them have been super mediocre, and they don't last long. The area north of Wall Street has had a particularly rough go of it over the past couple of decades. So I wasn't expecting much when my wife and I walked down to the Eagle for a burger the other night. It's under relatively new ownership - again - and we hadn't tried it yet. I wasn't planning to, either, but a couple of our bed-and-breakfast guests recommended it, so we decided to give it a shot. We weren't disappointed. This was easily the best hamburger I've ever had in the Black Hills. A little greasy, maybe, but you don't order a giant hand-ground beef burger expecting health food. It was tasty and incredibly well-made. Mine came with big beefy steak fries on the side, and they were crispy and fluffy and perfect. My wife opted for the mac and cheese, which was mostly cheese by volume, but also very tasty. But just as impressive as the food was the staff. Good help is hard to find around here, and I was blown away that they were all obviously friendly, competent, and experienced in customer service. That team deserves a raise. Matt: You're running a good show. Bravo!
UPDATE: I've been here almost monthly since my first review, and it's still a fantastic place to grab a burger. I feel like they might now be the second-best burger joint in town - the fries aren't as good these days, and the chef recently took his burger-making magic to a different place a few blocks over - but the Eagle is still a solid option. They may no longer have the best burger in town, but they still have the best burger on...
Read moreDefinitely worth the stop, one place you can take kids. My parents celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary wanting to cut cost being a group of 17 we decided we would only eat out once on our 4 day vacay. With the help of Kim the Eagle Bar and steakhouse did not disappoint. We stopped in on Sunday Labor Day weekend. Our waiter Kim was amazing, fast, super friendly and entertaining! The burgers were good, the fried green beans were amazing!! My husband hates green beans but said he’d eat those any day. Tasted like they used fresh out of the garden green beans. the Long Island iced teas were strong. Really only down side was we had the tables with benches and they was uncomfortable but we also traveled 10hrs. My father wanted to speak to the manger to praise Kim but he was out. So if you see this, Kim was awesome and definitely made our...
