Buffalo Bodega Complex — Restaurant in Deadwood

READ THIS. LONG BUT NECESSARY 4 newly seniors stopped in about 6:00 on a Saturday night. We had not seen each other for a couple years and we had lots to catch up on. We were seated right away. A server came over for our drink order ( I don’t think she was in a great mood that night) and when she came back, she wanted to take our food order. We said we were sorry we hadn’t even looked at the menu. She walked away grumpy. We blew it off. She came a second time for our order and we still needed some time. My husband teased her and said” we promise when you come back in 5 minutes, we’ll be ready”. She rudely replied” well it won’t be 5 minutes” and walked away even more grumpy. She came back again shortly after and we ordered our food. Her demeanor was that of a mean school marm. After a bit, one of our friends was wanting a second beer. She watched for our server but she didn’t come around. So our friend asked another server or two and a bus person if she could get a beer and asked for me a Chardonnay. Our server comes up to me and says “you don’t know that I’m your server and you ask someone else for a Chardonnay?” I was puzzled at her attacking me for reaching out to another server( my friend did that) and her SCOLDING ME! So we didn’t get our drinks. My friend’s husband goes up to the bar to order and get the drinks and told the bartender ( maybe the manager?) about our treatment. Our food came and it was good but our dinner was ruined because of our treatment. I don’t think this establishment knows the part about treating the customer with a smile and without getting grumpy. While still eating the bartender comes over and says, “ we need this table, so we going to need you to finish up and leave!!” What! I think the bartender and the server must have a thing going on or something? No one apologized for her bad attitude not her not bringing 2 drinks. Since we hadn’t gotten our drinks and had to order get them ourselves, I had over a 1/2 glass of Chardonnay left and asked for a box as my appetite was ruined by this whole scene. The bartender came over again and says” I need this table. I will call the police if you don’t leave!” Remember, we are all newly 65 years of age, semi retired, had only had 1- almost two adult beverages and we were being kicked out. I think partially because our friends were buying and they chose not to tip ( we always tip generously even if the service was not good but we weren’t paying that night. If it hadn’t blown up so badly, I know my husband would have discreetly given the server a nice tip. But since we were literally kicked out of this place ( which if it wasn’t so aggravating is funny and could be a SNL skit) we didn’t get to. also I had an almost full glass of wine so I asked for a to go glass. ( I have seen people on the street with beverages). Bartender wouldn’t give me one so I lost it! I poured the glass of wine on the bar and we walked out. We have in our many years of dining out, had some severs that aren’t friendly, kind etc. I try to think that they are having a bad day. Usually we joke with them and kill them with kindness as we know it’s a tough job. They usually lighten up. But this scenario got out of hand. We were dealing with ANGRY SERVER AND THEN BARTENDER. There were plenty of tables and no people waiting so the bartender was not being truthful. I have the owners names and will be contacting them. I find it sad that they treated us so poorly and expected us not to get upset. We should have left after the rude treatment before ordering. Obviously not good business practices. Hopefully Snotty server improves her attitude and understand as in any job that serves the public in any way, that treating people with respect is key. I hope you have a better experience. Oh I forgot! Our friend is a deputy in SD and had his badge...

We arrived & settled into Deadwood pretty late (close to 730pm) we needed a dog-friendly place to eat.

We decided to give the outdoor patio at the Buffalo Bodega a try.

It was a disappointment 😞 Our server was friendly though & we appreciated her effort, except for 2 things 1. She was not particularly informed w/items that were no longer available on the menu. 2. Keep reading

The restaurant was out of a great many items on the menu. So we settled on our 2nd & 3rd choices.

My daughter did love her chicken sandwich & mashed potatoes

The menu was not vegetarian friendly, so it was a struggle to land on something to order. I decided on a baked potato & the "seasonal" vegetables

My husband decided on a deadwood dip after his 1st choice of hot beef was not available & per the recommendation of the server. He also chose a baked potato for his side.

Turns out, after awhile we put in our order there were no baked potatoes. So I ended up ordering a side of sweet potato fries. 🙄

The bummer part of our service was when I was purposely served cold "seasonal vegetables " my server said she had seen them sit in the window for a long time and waited to see if I noticed they were cold 🤦‍♀️ so, needless to say my veggies were a miss. They were not so much seasonal as they were a bag of frozen vegetables, reheated.

The hot dip sandwich was also rated 1 star ⭐️😥

This might be a fun spot for drinks but it was a miss for the menu.

The saving grace here, is the bartenders. The bane, is the head honcho with thee most sincere lack of professionalism and diffusion who suddenly grabbed me by my collar on March 16, 2024 in the restroom, and threw me out after I had offered my assistance and defended myself in the restroom after confronting a few drunk patrons who were looking to piss on the restroom floor. I wasn't belligerent, didn't even have my first drop yet. In front of quite a few people who declared his actions to be overdone and wrong. Small scale? Don't know, I'm the only dark skin guy in the room who was snatched up. And he immediately grabbed me and threw me out. The instigator shoved me, I did not retaliate, while his buddies and surrounding patrons agreed with me, that it WASN'T a good idea to piss on the floor. I was preventing disrespect in an establishment and just trying to be a good Samaritan. I tip very well and look out for everyone, every time I go, make plenty of pleasant interactions and encouraging a pleasant experience for the patrons... seems as if I was a target at this point... Be careful in here. Seen a lot of shady shenanigans and have done the job better by preventing and assisting in not letting people leave with open containers not allowed by event regulations and other incidents. Saloon 10 does better in security, heads up. They don't drink while on the job.

But I was gripped up and tossed out...for being the better person? Hmm...

To be banned just by V O L U N T E E R I N G and being H E L P F U L with no harm on my part.

Just might fulfill my application and noted recommendations to step down from a division facility manager and up to law enforcement and show what it means to "uphold peace". I already do it for free.
