After Drs appt today, hubby asked where I wanted to go for late breakfast (always a treat for me). I had read about this place recently online and wanted to see if it really had the feel of a French coffee and bakery shop. Hubby got egg, bacon and Swiss croissant and I got almond croissant. Both were fresh and tasty. About 1.2 more seconds though, and his croissant would have been burnt on top. There was an older gentleman in the back who seemed in charge of baking. A younger man that we could never figure out his job? He would sometimes walk to the counter when a customer came in, but without a smile and without a greeting. A young lady absolutely ran her legs off waiting on everyone while he sat there and watched! Even if you're the owner, jump in! Tables around us were dirty, and stayed dirty the entire time we were there. The young lady could not possibly clean tables, wait on customers at the counter, bring out orders and make coffees like cappuccinos and lattes over and over! But she tried her best! While this younger man sat and watched her. We could not believe it! With the "state" of restaurants in Greenville right now, it seems that every employee, owner, chef etc. would pitch in to help their particular place stay afloat. We watched as a man read the menu outside, came in and decided to try it. When his Panini finally came out, the top of it was BLACK. Totally burnt! Of course he returned it and asked for his money back. He left. One customer, plus whoever he tells, that will not return. I had hoped to walk in and smell fresh coffee or something fresh baking inside. No, nothing close to that. I had hoped to buy some macaroons when we left. They looked so dried out and not fresh until I changed my mind. The idea of this little place is a good one. But it needs some efficiency with more than one employee. Reviews I read and pictures I see from 6 years ago are quite different from what we saw today. New...
Read moreI was excited to have an authentic croissant and support downtown businesses participating in the Fall for Greenville virtual discount book I purchased. We looked at the menu in advance and were impressed with the variety of selections and good reviews, but when we arrived a much different experience unfolded. We arrived shortly after noon on Sunday and when we went to order were told the kitchen was no longer open (even though the hours state open until 4) but they could make a ham, egg and cheese or a bacon, egg and cheese croissant, those were the only two options. I inquired about a slice of quiche and was told they only sell half or whole quiches, not slices. We were hungry so settled and ordered the bacon egg and cheese croissant. I did inquire as to when we should plan to arrive next time to ensure the kitchen was open and was told that it depends, but usually it closes between 2 and 3. Again, it was about 12:30 PM when we ordered. I also ordered an iced latte and was told they were out of ice, so I passed and got water. When the food arrived, it looked delicious but was very disappointing. The croissant was tough, the eggs were super overcooked and the consistency of hard boiled egg, and the bacon was underdone and chewy. It tasted 100% microwaved and was fairly inedible, despite my best efforts. The photo is what was left uneaten. The service was terrible as well. No one even checked to see how the food was after it was served to us. Another table inquired how the meal was because it looked so delicious and I had to honestly tell them it was not very good and I wouldn’t order it again. The staff heard this conversation and still said nothing, even after most of my meal was left uneaten. I love supporting local businesses, and would love to give it another try because all businesses make mistakes, but the attitude of carelessness I experienced here would keep me...
Read moreI'm sure their products taste delicious, but the photos/marketing for the Croquembouche is extremely misleading. I understand when you purchase edible art it will always vary from the photo, but this is not the same product visually by any means. You are not purchasing the beautiful, detailed, unique, high end product from their website photo. In addition, the décor you see in their website photo is NOT included. More importantly they do not communicate that with you nor is it listed on their website that the details vary dependent on the weather, or the size you purchase or whatever else excuse that they gave me...which, it was not raining that day nor was it humid and the delivery was 20-30 minutes from their shop. Since Google won't allow me to post the photo from their website for comparison, below is just the picture of the item I received... you can go to their website and look at the Croquembouche for yourself to see how different these items are. I respectfully spoke to the owner in hopes there was an error, or that he would take the right steps to amend the situation and I provided the photo below and was basically given a plethora of excuses summed up with, "it is what it is". So just be aware.
In response to his professional comment below, who would want to purchase from a café where the owner is rude, extremely pretentious and berates his customers for politely and respectfully communicating an issue. As for his comment about purchasing the "cheapest" version of this desert, I was purchasing this item for only 2 people and it still cost $95. The only thing cheap about this purchase, was the product I actually received, Vincent, you aren't doing customers a "favor" by selling false advertised goods. No clue how this guy is still in business, the croissants MUST...
