Funky contemporary food truck for Hawaiian style hot dogs conveniently located in Waikiki. Sometimes you just want a hot dog, even in paradise, and several tropical dressings, this place delivers. There are a lot of choices and you can create your very own Hawaiian Hula dog 😊

I was so excited to go try this place. Our first attempt, huuuuge line (yes, I turned around immediately). Next time, I got there on the early-ish side and had only 2 people ahead YAY!!

Hula dog basically is a closed hot dog bun (made with Hula bread: White / Wheat / Bacon Taro), with a hole on the top to insert sausage of your choice (Polish Sausage / Veggie Dog), adding condiments (classic ketchup mustard or pineapple / mango / coconut relish and aioli’s). I love that you can mix and match and create your own meal with just things you like.

How to order a Hula Dog?

Step 1 - Hula Dog Bread White / Wheat / Bacon Taro

Step 2 - Sausage Polish Sausage / Veggie Dog

Step 3 - Hula Dog Roasted Garlic Lemon Sauce Original (mild), jalapeno (spicy), Chili Pepper (hot), Habanero (hot-hot)

Step 4 - Hula Dog Tropical Relishes Mango Relish, Pineapple Relish, Papaya Relish, Banana Relish, Star Fruit Relish, Coconut Relish

Step - 5 Hula Dog Hawaiian Mustards Lilikoi Mustard (tangy), Guava Mustard (sweet)

it's a perfect street food that you can get from a food truck 2 blocks from the beach, customize to your liking with tropical twists and eat on the go. Sounds great, right?!

I think in principle it's a great concept and if executed well it can be delicious. Unfortunately, they didn't heat up the bread enough (cold on the bottom), the bread-to-sausage ratio is wrong (too much bread for the size of the sausage). The girl working there didn’t seem to be having a good day … there was zero interaction/ customer service from her aside from handing the credit card machine and 3 minutes later our “coldish” hot dogs

Wait, I still have a little more to say…

The buns were very thick. Which if you like a lot of bread, you'll really like them but not only bread was very thick, it was cold too. You can get the condiments that you want, try different types, mixed together, it does make for a unique flavor. Again, it was not terrible, I still love the idea

**Food Truck Fun Fact - It Has Its Own National Holiday! “National Eat at a Food Truck Day” is celebrated on June 24. On this day, many food trucks offer specials, such as a free meal, a complimentary drink with your purchase, or a percentage off your order total. Not only is it a fun way to indulge in a great meal, but it also helps contribute to worthwhile small businesses.

*Note - I took 1 star since we had pretty cold service AND food but still think you should give it a try (I will give it a second chance once I'm...

While planning our Hawaii trip we heard that we must try these amazing "Hot dogs". We made the effort to find their location and try their wares. When we approached there were only 2 ladies at a picnic bench waiting for their order. There are 2 windows on the side of the truck, one for ordering and one for pickup. We stood in front of the order window for approximately 5 minutes while this dude was making some lemonade. There was absolutely no greeting or acknowledgment. I finally leaned over to the next window and asked him if he was open...He said "Yes". Wow.

After another minute or so he sauntered over and said "What do you want" Very polite fellow. We placed our order for two Hula Dogs and two Lemonades. When the order was finished he took the cash and that was it. What a warm and welcoming business motto. We waited on the picnic bench and felt like we made such a mistake in giving this much money to a rude business...but maybe they were just so delicious that it was worth the rudeness. Also, when I asked for their pineapple relish, he said" we don't have any today" . Then what makes you special!

He finally yelled our order out, we took a picture for you of the order. To be brutally honest, it is a vertical Hotdog in a burned bun. The buns are steamed first which makes them super soft but when you burn the inside it makes it crunchy. We ate silently as we were both shocked that this terrible Hot Dog is what everyone raved about. They post many posters of Anthony Bourdain loving these.....I am sorry but he must have been hung over and really hungry because they are glorified hot dogs and really not very good. Also, The Anothony Bourdain recommendation was for "PUKA DOG" not "HULA DOG". Puka dog is a completely other location.

Save your money and find one of the amazing restaurants in Hawaii and get some great service or try the other food truck beside him. They are super friendly and were sympathetic with us when we mention how rude...

Everything about the hype is real. Ordered a Hula dog with soft pillowy Hawaiian bread with a polish link, tropical relish, reg Jalapeño sauce, and tangy likikoi mustard. Yes they give you that many options to concoct your specialty hot dog to satisfy your island foodie craving. The portion is more than ample and they do not skimp on the ingredients. The dog is constructed so that it holds its contents all the way to the end making all the flavors consistent to the last bite. No one likes a hot dog that falls apart on them or have the ingredients all drip out. The Hula dog maintains its integrity both in shape and taste throughout your elevated food truck experience. The proprietors are also real friendly and take a lot of pride in their food. Additional info. They also have some big savory island style sandwiches on their menu and I made the mistake of bringing my own water because I didn’t order any of their specialty drinks which everybody else ordered. Yum. Unlike their previous location, they are situated in a bigger lot with a tented table area so you won’t have to burn in the sun or be forced to take your food to a park or eat in your car. Believe the hype and go and do yourself a solid by enjoying the HULA...

I'm happy to see that Puka Dog has reemerged as Hula Dog, and got a cute little spot down the street from International Market Place. It's a small cart next to a taco cart, with a few benches with umbrellas to dine on. It's a decent dog, a bit pricey, but you do get 3 toppings included. A veggie dog is around $7, while a polish is $6. And I haven't seen a hot dog served in a hollowed bum anywhere else. I like my savory eats on the sweeter side, and the papaya relish does exactly that. Paired with the tangy lilikoi mustard, and, in the words of Chandler Bing, perfection. I went here twice during my vacation because it's that good. Service can be a bit slow because it takes awhile to heat up the buns, but it's worth the wait. You get a choice of white, wheat, or taro-bacon buns. I opted for the taro-bacon. It had bits of bacon baked in it. It could've used more bacon, but I think it's baked with few in it due to the salt content. This cart has Square with no minimum, which I was happy to see because many of the smaller establishments are cash only. So no worries if you only have a credit card.
