Pho Express Newport — Restaurant in Jersey City

I went in today and ordered a few items. Overall, I think the food is quite good for a food court and would come again if I were ever in Newport mall. With that said, the service I had was good. The lady at the register helped me with adjusting my drink order and allowed me to sample drinks before buying. Just as an aside, the two workers I spoke to are Chinese and not Vietnamese.

Brisket Pho - 6/10 Overall flavor of pho is fine. The meat was not bad. Noodles were slightly overcooked. The broth had the correct flavor but didn’t have the body or richness of a pho broth that I am typically used to. Slightly too salty for my taste.

Grilled Pork Vermicelli - 7/10 The vermicelli noodles in this dish were not good. They fell apart a bit and were not chewy. The toppings offered were quite nice, as well as the provided fish sauce. The grilled pork was the best part of this dish and was quite nice, albeit too salty for the dish. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with this dish.

Spring rolls - 4/10 I was expecting this place to have Vietnamese style spring rolls but was served Chinese style instead. I think it was just fine, but I personally would not order again since I would like to have Viet style.

Vietnamese Coffee - 5/10 The sample that I had was sweeter than what I was served. It had a burn-y quality to it but it wasn’t terrible in terms of taste. I would order again only if I was in the mall wanting a cup of coffee.

Thai Iced Tea - 10/10 By far my favorite part of the meal. The sample I tried was far too sweet for my liking. This is just because I personally don’t enjoy sugar in my tea. But, after the woman at the register helped me to adjust the sugar level in my drink, it tasted so much better. The tea that they used seemed to be actually brewed and not instant which is amazing. Maybe the pho is good but I only got the banh mi and if I could give it negative stars, I would. Looks nothing like a banh mi, and the “lemongrass pork” was 95% translucent - all fat, i guess to cut costs. I like fat on meat but this was inedible. The bread was absolutely terrible and the veggies lacking. I wouldn’t pay $5 for it...
