Urban Egg: 7 a.m.-2 p.m. A new, great, breakfast-brunch-lunch place in Johnstown CO.What?! Where? What? And just where is that? (Quick reference: I-25/US-34. East of the intersection, located in the 2534 Shopping Center perhaps known most easily by the Scheels store on the large growing site.) Do we really need another restaurant of this type? Well, YES! Opened mid-March 2019, they've hit the ground running, with wonderful food, pleasant, trained, helpful and experienced waitstaff and management. And, obviously, people who can cook well. Prices reasonable considering the superlatives. (Last month at the Grand Canyon AZ MacDonalds our two mini-breakfasts of sandwich & "senior coffee" was $18! We also passed on the $15 pp. + beverage +tax +site fee monster buffet at the hotel--but I digress.) But wait, you don't want fast food! Urban Egg has an extensive broad-range menu (check it on-line). Tasty, generous helpings, excellent coffee, plenty of specialty beverages too, wide choice of combinations, or limitations. Beautiful setting with the entire Front Range visible from your booth, table, or outdoor patio on the building's west side. (I like ambiance with my meal--makes it taste even better.) This is not your typical road-side diner, or drive-thru, or rush out with a bag full of stuff to your 4th grade soccer team in your van. Enjoy a break! Squeeky-clean, new & sparkling, Go in...get served...eat a great meal served the best way--to you, sitting comfortably, wanting to savor & refresh. Easy to reach; gobs of parking. You'll be greeted, seated, served, & well-attended by the staff. Friendly, but not too; helpful, but not intrusive; watchful, but not lurking. Biscuits and gravy, scrambled egg, and the lightest, fluffiest, tastiest pancakes ever created were our limited 2-person choices, shared and yummmed over on a busy Thursday morning. We'll be back. Again, Johnstown? Ok, just east of Loveland, west of Greeley, across the road from Centerra which beckons to the north. Got it? Go! It will...
Read moreWeekend wait times are long, this is to be expected. They do make use of yelp Wait list, which was great. Let me tell you , it was worth the wait! Staff was excellent and attentive. The manager was even helping to serve to cut down on the wait times. Hostesses were friendly, even though we walked in mask less.
Even if the above was bad, in my opinion, the food would be worth it. We left so full, we didn't eat until the next day. So beware, it is easy to want to try and finish everything!!
We started with their bloody Mary and a cocomosa. Both excellent. Best bloody we have had around here and it came with an awesome garnish. They do have a bloody bar, but we just got a single, thank goodness because we couldn't have fit more drinks in us with all the good food! The cocomosa was a delightful change from the standard mimosa. With pineapple, rum, coconut water and prosecco.
I opted for the ABCLT, Avocado bacon cheese lettuce and tomato. But I added and over medium egg. Too die for! We sushi got the steak and eggs with loaded hash browns. Cooked perfect and the hash browns were excellent! We couldn't leave without trying one of the special pancake flavors. We got Fred's Hawaiian. Holy Moley.... Knocked out socks off. I will definitely go back just to get a flight if the other flavor choices.
Can't wait to make another go of the urban...
Read moreWe visited Urban Egg on a Sunday and waited about 25 minutes to be seated. The restaurant was extremely busy and quite loud, which made the wait feel longer.
I ordered a chai drink that was absolutely delicious, while my husband had orange juice, which he said was good. For my meal, I asked for avocado toast, but the waitress seemed confused unless I used the full name—“Tate’s Avocado Toast.” When it arrived, it came with very well-done bacon that was tough and difficult to chew.
The accompanying salad was enormous and filled with tomatoes, which wasn’t mentioned on the menu. Since I’m allergic to tomatoes, I had to pick many of them out and ended up eating very little of the salad. I had requested the gluten-free option, but the bread was dense and sticky—not very enjoyable. The avocado portion was actually guacamole, which technically fits the description but isn’t what most people expect when ordering avocado toast.
My husband ordered the chorizo burrito and felt it was mostly tortilla with little flavor. The side of hash browns was bland, even after adding a generous amount of salt.
Overall, we were disappointed with the food. I ate about a quarter of my meal, and my husband finished roughly half of his. We left shortly after. With so many breakfast options available, Urban Egg needs to step up its game—as we won’t...
