My sons and I visited Winstead's on our way out of Kansas the other day. I consider myself a burger lover, but in all my trips to Kansas City, I have never stopped here. So we decided that this was the time. We visited Sunday evening, about 7:00 so the restaurant wasn't that busy. The restaurant is allowing internal eating, but also has a drive-thru open 24 hours. The menu is a simple two pages, front and back. It's classic diner food, burgers, chicken sandwiches, fried foods, and shakes. My son got the chicken sandwich and a chocolate milkshake, which he said the chicken sandwich was crispy and delicious. It was fairly good sized for the price and he enjoyed it. The milkshake tasted good, but he said was poorly blended ice cream and milk but not a lot of depth to the flavor. Once it melted, it was extremely drinkable and good. My other son and I got the double Winstead, which is two patties and your choice of toppings. The patties are traditional smashburgers, very thin and perfectly seasoned. Being of the burgers are thin, it means that you don't get a ton of meat, weight-wise, but you do get a delicious seared patty, with all the crispy bits that you expect from a griddle burger. My son and I also tried the onion rings, which had a crispy breading, but no seasoning. The onion rings would be difficult to eat a whole order without dipping in something or salting yourself. But the batter definitely could have used some seasoning. Tater tots and fries are pretty common, and both were delicious here. The tater tots were crispy and golden, as were the fries. Overall, we spent about $34 for the three of us, which is a little bit pricey but the food was delicious, and I feel that it was worth it. The restaurant does have happy hour from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., with half price drinks and shakes. If you were going to try the shake, this would definitely be the time. Otherwise, shakes range from like $3.45 to $6.75 and are somewhat expensive. Overall, Winstead's was delicious and certainly needed to be on my list of places to try. If I was in Kansas City, this would be a place I would eat at if I was driving by. But it's not a place I would drive across Kansas City, or several hours just to visit. But overall, the diner restaurant theme is disappearing, and Winstead's fills a definite need for this type of restaurant. For locals, this is definitely a place that could be a burger favorite. For travelers, I definitely recommend trying this...
Read moreFood: The burger was tasty, but the bun is low quality. It's also kind of small for the price. The burger is also a little dry. The fries are flavorless, soft, and consistently undercooked. The onion rings are, however, delicious and when i ordered them they were perfectly cooked and i didn't have that problem where you bite into them and the whole slimy onion comes out of the fried crust. The tater tots were also great although I'm sure they are originally frozen before they are prepared. That being said, they are cooked and salted well! For my shake, I had the banana malt with hot fudge. The malt was very tasty, however, it came out half melted and hot fudge was just a little burnt. All that aside, it was enjoyable.
Service: Our servers were kind and courteous, but clearly untrained and not great at communicating and clarifying out orders. They were still accommodating when mistakes were made. They could use some better managing tho. That being said, all of the workers i interacted with were very kind a did there best to make experience pleasant.
Atmosphere: I love the classic diner feel with the jukebox music. It is a true American diner with an albeit limited menu. However, one will quickly notice the place is starting to get a little run down and could use some work to bring out that American shine. I'm not saying it needs to me modernized, just cleaned up a bit so some of the long years of wear and tear don't show as much. They could do something to brighten the place up a bit as well. It's a kind of quiet un-exciting place.
Overall it's ok. It's a Kansas City classic and the diner style makes it a great place to meet up with friends, but i wouldn't go out of my way just to...
Read moreEver since I was a young child, I liked eating from and at Winstead’s Steakburgers, especially their milkshakes. I even remember when there used to be a Winstead’s location in the Northland, and it was located really close to my house, and there were about 9 or 10 locations around the Kansas City metropolitan area. But now, there are currently 2 or 3 locations left. My family & I either went through the Drive-Thru or dined in at Winstead’s. The restaurants have always had good service at the drive-through and in the dining room. The place looks like a diner from the 1950s on the inside and on the outside too,
The menu at Winstead’s Drive-In is known for steakburgers, old school soda-fountain desserts, and breakfast in the mornings. One notable menu item that Winstead’s is famous for is their “skyscraper-height” ice cream soda floats and milkshakes that are meant to feed two, three, or even four customers. The last time me and my dad went to Winstead’s on the Country Club Plaza was back in late July of this year. We ordered two Winstead Steakburgers with 3 large platters of 3 different side dishes. We also got two different flavors of milkshakes with our order. My Winstead burger had a lot of toppings The bottom line is that me and my dad’s food was delicious like any other time we ate at Winstead’s.
If there are customers who would like to eat at an old school style 1950s diner that is also an old school soda fountain, I would recommend that Winstead’s Steakburgers is the restaurant to eat at in Kansas City. The Winstead’s location on the Country Club Plaza is the original location, and it’s drive-through is...
