My friends and I are from Wenatchee so we’re used to the experience we have at Pybus’s South. This experience was different.
We remembered that, at one point, they had sangrias but I couldn’t find anything about them on the menu. When the waitress arrived, I asked if they possibly still served them or if they were gone for good? She said they do so I asked what kind of sangrias they serve or what all is in the sangria they have. She really hits me with, “Well, it’s a sangria”. I ask the waitress if she’s possibly ever seen what kind of fruits are in it, if it’s more sweet seeming or more citrusy? Hoping I’ll get some kind of indication that I might like it.
“I’d have to go back inside again to find out”….
The entire table just awkwardly sat there staring at her for a solid few minutes, in silence. She REALLY didn’t want to go back inside. Finally she asks, “So you DON’T want a sangria?”. I order one because I’m here to have fun so why not drink away the awkward! She gets everybody else’s drink orders and leaves. We get our drinks a while later and my friend’s margarita had a brown lime, NOT on the side, but in the drink. There was, what seemed like, a mint leaf on top and it was slimy.
The waitress returns only to double down on what is now the weirdest experience we’ve had at South. We all are ordering food and I order a mission burrito. She asks what I want in it and I mistakenly said beef instead of carne asada. She corrects me, the order’s good!
She asks my boyfriend and he checks the menu for a second. In the middle of him talking, she takes my friend’s orders on the side. My friends want theirs with carnitas. My boyfriend orders a wet mission burrito and when asked, he says beef but this time she asks him what he means. I remind him carne asada and he agrees, she doesn’t hear. I let her know he meant to say carne asada, “Ok carnitas!” “No, he meant carne asadas! Beef!” “Ok a wet burrito with carnitas!” “Beef… Carne… asadas…” She repeats the entire order and really kept his add in as carnitas still.
She could have been confused because she asked for my friend’s order across the table but she shouldn’t multitask if she isn’t able to keep orders straight.
She really served him a burrito with pork that was ironically dry for a wet burrito. We got a laugh out of it. My friend’s enchiladas were fairly dry too. I’m usually not too picky so I didn’t mind my burrito.
The waitress wasn’t wearing a name tag and her name wasn’t on the online receipt but I wish we had anybody else because the other table that came in after us seemed to have a smooth and quick experience. They got their drinks, food and check in a timely manner so they were out before we were. They had another waitress. Ours is the gal with the tattoos. An hourglass tattoo on her right arm, shorter hair, 4 kids. Waitstaff makes a huge difference in experience.
All in all, wasn’t worth it this time and I don’t know what we did wrong to piss them off. We usually stop by South when we have friends in town, I didn’t think going to the Leavenworth branch would make such a difference. I hope that, if there is a next time, this experience will be better. South in Wenatchee is usually...
Read moreWas recomended this place by two people who we know that live in the area. It has potential (location and nice outdoor sitting area) I dont know if it was a off day to go or what but I went with zero expectations. I think with some minor tweaks it can be better. Hows the food? Honestly its just ok and for the price I left feeling disappointed. While we were waiting outside the building for a outdoor table I heard a women say to her husband to the effect the food was ok and the place is overated as they left. My father used the rest room and got locked inside. I had to get a staff member to assist because the lock mechanism had failed to unlock. No fresh hot tortilla chips. You pay extra for chips and I dont think they make them and if they do there not served warm. My sons chicken soft taco literally had nothing in the taco i mean literally nothing but chicken and a hand full of chips on his plate. I have never seen that before at any mexican restaurant. My other sons order looked ok. My wife and I both ordered steak soft tacos which were fine. My mom ordered the tortilla soup and my father ordered the wet burrito. Things to mention. While waiting for food the server asked if we wanted to order chips. We said yes. Before we saw her again the first plate arrived. When she swang by i asked about the order of chips and her response was " oh, you still want them?" We said "yes". Once we starting eating everything was fine until are server asked my dad if he was finished eating. He had about a quarter of the burito left but he had his drink in his hand. It wasnt the appropriate time to ask . My dad said "no, im still eating" so she started taking my plate and also the plate we had the salsa dishes on but we still were snacking on the chips which i didnt understand. Chips=salsa kinda go together?? Once everyone was done eating i asked for the bill. No bill was given. Instead she asks cash or card. I said card. But i asked to see the bill first before being charged like 99.98 of all restaurants are customary of doing. Brings my bill, bill looks fine swipes my card on the tablet and hands me the tablet for tip portion while standing over me. I didnt like that. I always tip good regardless of experience because i have in the past worked in the industry but when i saw my bill was 120 + 20% for essentially less impressive dinning experience i knew i was the one "paying" for this experience. This is essentially a casual burrito and taco restaurant. Menu is light and simple with a lot of items missing you would see on a traditional mexican restaurant menu. The drinks are stiff...could be a positive for some. Definatley have zero desire to...
Read moreI've honestly never given South a fair shake, and that's on me. When I visit Leavenworth (or Wenatchee, at the Pybus Public Market, for that matter), Latin cuisine is shamefully not high on my list of priorities. I'm usually in the mood for bratwurst, cheeses, and cold beer, so things like salsa, tortillas and tequila don't usually show up on my radar. That said, I have had the privilege of dining (with friends) at South on at least two occasions, usually, in our case, for nothing more than snacks and drinks. And that's fine. Because in both instances, they have been fantastic. They just weren't what I was there for.
I will tell you this, though: their Stinger cocktail is fantastic, and I order it every time I see in on a menu. Tequila, cilantro and jalapeno may not be your cup o' tea (or booze), but it sure as Hell is mine, and what an amazing little glass of awesome it is!
Additionally, South is one of the few restaurants in Leavenworth where you don't need a reservation to grab a table in a reasonable amount of time, even without forward planning. Probably for the same reasons that I mentioned earlier, about most tourist schmucks (like me) seeking to suck down some sausage and sauerkraut instead of sope and salsa...screw those guys! This is good food, and reasonable (for tourist towns, anyway) prices! I'm sure there will be a day when I am done with spaetzle and schnitzel, when places like south will rocket to the top of my favorite restaurants in Leavenworth, like their INCREDIBLE Mongolian grill (re: incredibly located AND incredibly overpriced), but as I said, I haven't given it a fair shake...yet.
If you've come to a Bavarian(-themed) town like Leavenworth, and aren't particularly picky about your flavor of cuisine being terribly on-point with the local flavor around you, then South is definitely up your alley, without actually being up an alley, because it's right there on Front Street, nestled between the (wonderful!) Ludwig's and the eternal Christmas extravaganza that is Kris Kringl. I certainly have no complaints, despite my limited exposure. If their drinks and snacks are any indication, as well as the testimony of several of our friends, you're in for the real...
