We were planning for a short trip to Leavenworth and fell for the positive reviews for Andreas Keller Restaurant, thinking that it is a must visit restaurant. We tried reserving a table online in vain, and then tried going in person. We stopped by the restaurant on the first day we got to Leavenworth and were told at around 5:00pm they wouldn't have a table until 10:00pm or after, and were told we could try the next day, because they have a waitlist that starts at 11:30am daily. We tried calling right after 11:30am the next day, but nobody picked up the phone. The voicemail said somebody would call us back if we leave a message. We did that but received no calls. We went to the restaurant in person around 2:30pm, and was told that they haven't been listening to the messages at all. We put our name down on the waitlist then, and we got a message around 8:15pm that we had a table. It was a very long wait, but would have been worth it if the food was any good. IT WAS AWFUL.
We ordered the Schweinshaxe (pork hock) $48.99, the Kassler Kottlets (thick cut pork chop) $22.99 and the Chicken Oktoberfest (rotisserie chicken) $22.99 to share. The pork hock and the pork chops tasted like they had been used to boil for broth, and had no taste. The skin on the pork hock was hard but not crispy. It was impossible to cut or to chew. It was served with mustard, not gravy. We stopped by a grocery store later and saw fully cooked pork chops that looked exactly like what we had just eaten selling for $6.99. The chicken, on a relative scale, was less disappointing, but any Costco rotisserie chicken beats it hands down. The only thing that is decent is the sauerkraut. One star for that and for that only.
There was live music performing the whole time we were there. It was nice in the beginning, but when it is so loud and basically playing non-stop for the whole time, it did get overwhelming. It would have been better if the live music comes on every half an hour or every 15 minutes instead of being non-stop. We did appreciate the effort, the setup of the tables (booths look like wine barrels), and the fact the servers were wearing traditional style clothing, hence the three stars for "atmosphere".
It took a lot of effort and time to get a table. The server did try her best despite her being visibly worn out, and that's what caused me to give the three stars over the "service".
I rarely leave reviews for any restaurants. I do this as a public service to warn others to not fall for the hype and pay for an expensive and unsatisfying meal.
The meals in Leavenworth are in general pricier and we understand that it is to be expected in a touristy town, but do not waste your precious time waiting for a table in...
Read moreCome for the atmosphere but don't expect authentic German food. The smell of the food lured me in when I was on my way to another restaurant, so I was hoping it would be worth the change. In order to access the restaurant you must go down a flight of stairs - so take that into account when considering accessibility.
The decor is warm and inviting, and there even was a live accordion musician. Servers were dressed in traditional German style clothing. There is a decent selection of traditional German beers on tap, just be sure to ask about them since the menu doesn't offer much description. Personally that's where the positives of this restaurant ended.
Service was lacking and seemed rushed. Our server never introduced himself and when he came to our table for the first time, he immediately asked if we had decided on what we wanted to order despite only sitting for a few minutes. He did check on us throughout the meal, but I was put off by that point from the earlier interaction.
We started with a giant pretzel, which was very giant but tasted more like bread rather than a pretzel. It lacked salt and the dense texture characteristic of a pretzel. I got the sampler plate and a side order of spätzle, while my partner got the Oktoberfest chicken and a fried egg. Be warned the fried egg is literally a pan fried egg (lol), we were caught off guard given it's $5 cost. We enjoyed the cold potato salad from the Oktoberfest plate, and I particularly enjoyed the red cabbage. The sauerkraut was sweeter than I was expecting, but could be balanced when mixed with the red cabbage. Overall our dishes were okay, but I have definitely had better food both in taste and quality from other German restaurants.
We were able to walk in and be sat right away, but I would recommend going to a different restaurant if there is a wait. I definitely believe you are paying for the atmosphere and experience rather...
Read moreWe arrived at the restaurant at 7.55, following a recommendation from our hotel - we wanted to try some of the german food whilst here. There were around a dozen people still in the restaurant. The server was frosty (at best) saying "we close at 8, I'm not sure if the kitchen is still open" - so I asked her if she could check, rather than leave it at "i'm not sure!!! She came back and said yes, but you'll have to order soon. The people in line behind us were then turned away by another server - not sure why you would let only half the people in line in. The server hovered by our table whilst we ordered. I knew that my wife would not be happy with either the server or the restaurant, so we just ordered a couple of glasses of wine, and some sausage dishes, to get it over and done with. Meanwhile the staff started cleaning up around the remaining guests, who soon asked for the check and left - within 25 minutes, there were just 4 guests left in the restaurant and the staff were in full cleaning up mode - chairs on tables, cleaning everything, and by 8.35 most of the team had their coats on waiting to go - a clear hint!! The food was very disappointing - clearly the kitchen staff served what was left without making the effort to heat it up - the potatoes were (at best) luke warm. The sausage was OK, the server tried to recover her poor start, but first impressions had already set in. My view on the situation was this - make your opening times really clear. If you are open, then welcome guests in and treat them the same as everyone else. If you are open, then stay open, don't do half a job - serve the same high quality food to everyone, and let everyone enjoy their meal without feeling like they are being rushed out of the door. Clearly the team on duty that night felt...
