I am in love with Leavenworth! My first visit was for Oktoberfest 2014; I was invited along with some friends who had the foresight to book a hotel room almost a year in advance, and I am so very glad they did! While I have never been much of a beer drinker, I do love festivals, live music, fair food and street stalls, so I was eager to come along and see what this place was all about.

In my experience, the name "Leavenworth" was only ever mentioned alongside "Oktoberfest", yet even so, I was not aware that the town itself was German-themed. Indeed, there appears to be a city ordinance requiring businesses to tailor their aesthetics to Bavarian standards. Even international chains such as Safeway, McDonald's and Starbucks follow suit, and the result is charming, if a bit campy. As you draw closer to town square, the big name businesses fall away, and the local flavor picks up momentum. By the time you find yourself standing in front of the gazebo on Front Street, surrounded by alpine mountains (snow-capped in fall and winter) and the muraled, gabled facades of tall A-framed buildings, you may start to believe you've somehow been transported to a quaint, Bavarian village.

My wife and I have made Leavenworth our yearly Christmas destination, and it's hard for us to imagine going anywhere else. There's no better holiday experience than shopping for presents and a new ornament in the local shops, stopping for a hot gluhwein, taking a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride, and a kiss under the lighted Christmas tree in Front Street park.

All that being said, Leavenworth is great any time of the year; the off-season is just as charming for its local winery tours, amazing hikes (I still have the Enchantments left to do on my bucket list, sadly) and availability of other outdoor activities (climbing, skiing, camping, etc). If you can't find something you like in or around Leavenworth, just stay home: you are boring.

Front Street Park is where most of the magic of Leavenworth happens; it's the locus around which most people will find themselves wandering, shopping and dining throughout their visit, even if they don't spend all that much time in the park itself.

Whether you're here for the Christmas lights, Oktoberfest, Wine Walk or any of the other myriad events that occur throughout the year, you're going to pass through the park at some point. The bandstand gazebo is utilized for everything from civic announcements, to choirs and live music, and much more.

In the winter, after a healthy snowfall, the hill that rises up and runs adjacent to Highway 2 is populated by sledders and tubers rocketing down constantly, so give them plenty of clearance, or you might find yourself swept up off your feet! Other times of the year, you'll find vendors hawking art work, crafts, and of course, all manner of foodstuffs, Bavarian or otherwise.

During heavily trafficked events, Front Street itself is closed to vehicle traffic, allowing the ever-swelling mass of tourists (myself and my wife included) to stagger about like a horde of spendthrift zombies, surging and stumbling in and out of the shops and restaurants across the way.

Tourist trap or not, Leavenworth is a place that holds a special place in the hearts of an uncountable number of visitors from all over the globe, and Front Street Park is an essential component behind this romantic nostalgia. Its magnetic ability to draw in tourists like flies to...flypaper...is due to it being just a gorgeous park to begin with, but with the addition of Christmas lights or other holiday-specific decorations, it becomes something truly special. Magical, even. There's a reason that Leavenworth is considered to be one of the best Christmas towns in the entire country; esteem that is rightfully well-earned.

Also, be sure to stop at the charming Smallwood's Harvest in Peshastin, on the way out of town. One of the best small farmer's market stores...

Our recent trip to Leavenworth, Washington, was an enchanting experience that exceeded all expectations. Nestled in the heart of the Cascades, this picturesque Bavarian village transports visitors to a world of old-world charm, stunning scenery, and warm hospitality.

From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the village's quaint architecture, with its Bavarian-inspired facades adorned with colorful flower boxes and charming storefronts. Wandering through the cobblestone streets felt like stepping into a fairytale, with every corner revealing a new delight to discover.

One of the highlights of our visit was exploring the local shops and boutiques. From artisanal chocolates to handcrafted souvenirs, Leavenworth offers a treasure trove of unique finds that are sure to delight shoppers of all tastes. We particularly enjoyed browsing the Christmas store, where we found a variety of festive decorations to bring home as mementos of our trip.

Of course, no visit to Leavenworth would be complete without indulging in its culinary delights. The village boasts a diverse array of restaurants and eateries, serving up everything from hearty German fare to gourmet cuisine. We savored every bite of our meals, whether dining on schnitzel and sauerkraut or indulging in freshly baked pastries at one of the local bakeries.

In addition to its charming village center, Leavenworth offers a wealth of outdoor activities for nature lovers. We spent a day hiking in nearby trails, soaking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and forests. The crisp mountain air invigorated our spirits, and we returned to the village feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Overall, our time in Leavenworth was nothing short of magical. Whether you're seeking a romantic getaway, a family adventure, or simply a chance to unwind amidst stunning scenery, this charming Bavarian village has something for everyone. We can't wait to return and experience its warmth and...
