Wish I would have taken a picture beforehand but it was so good I about inhaled my pie.
This spot is newer to DTLA in a location where quite a few restaurants have cycled in and out. After driving/walking by for a few months I finally decided to pop in and check it out.
Antonio, I think that was his name my bad if I remembered wrong, greeted me and gave me some background on the restaurant. They used to have a truck on Sunset and Figueroa, but transitioned to this brick and mortar location.
The inside had fresh tile on the floor and bar that was very clean. I hadn't been in this location in a while because the previous restaurants were a little suspect, but they really did a good job renovating this spot. The ambience was nice and they had some seating if you wanted to enjoy your food inside.
According to Antonio the pizzas were wood fired when they had a truck but now they use propane fueled ovens. My pizza was prepared and cooked in 5 minutes or so and I appreciated the quick service. I'm a fan of brick fired ovens and this spot peaked my interest because most of the pizza joints in downtown are either New York by the slice style or a chain like Pizza Hut.
I got a simple pepperoni pie, I always like to start simple and then get creative on the next visit if it's any good. My thoughts are if you can't do the simple things right then I don't want to venture off into anything too crazy. The pizza itself had a nice crunch to it but was still soft and chewy for the crust. I was worried at first that the char on the crust would be a little much but that's to be expected with quick fire pizzas. The amount it was baked though was perfect and the char did not take away from the taste or overpower the flavor. The toppings seemed quality and the pizza wasn't to greasy where I felt like I needed to remove some before eating.
The OG pepperoni was $14 before taxes and tip which is really fair for this area. I like to eat so I was able to put a whole pie down but was definitely full. I would compare it to like a medium pizza at another pizza joint. Definitely could serve 2 people if you're not a pizza gremlin like myself.
Overall I would give the experience 5 stars and the pizza an 8.5-9 out of 10. Which is high praise because I don't really rate things as a 10 unless it's the best thing I have ever tried in my life.
Glad to have found this local gem and will...
Read moreWow! I never have the time nor do I take the time out to leave reviews, especially on Google, but I am greatly astonished by how amazing this establishment operates. I’m not “A hole in the wall kind of girl,” but Picasso pie captured my undivided Attention. This pizza parlor is more than amazing! I have literally ordered their entire menu on various occasions, just to share and show friends how glorious and divine Picasso pizza really is. My ultimate favorite is their Maserati pizza which I find delectable. Although their pepperoni ,vegetarian and margherita pizza is incredibly flavorful and inviting, I must disclose the barbecue pizza is something to run home and tell your mother, father, sister brother, neighbors, strangers, and every possible individual you know about! The stone oven pizzas are prepared on demand with fresh ingredients and cooked to perfection!
What more can you ask for?
You know the food is good when you have a sudden craving for it.
There’s never been a time that I have visited, where I didn’t have impeccable service . They go above and beyond when it comes to their customers. I believe the owner is a cool gorgeous white man with blue eyes that goes by the name of James and his handsome black guy nephew. It’s a family owned business. They are very passionate in what they do ( which I give a plus). The restaurant is extremely clean and neat. I wish every business ran the way they run theirs. I’m very picky and particular.
It is unusual for a person, that others would describe as pretentious, of me to go to a place like this , let alone leave a lengthy review, but it is well-deserved. I only go to Michelin and five star restaurants every night, but this place Offers better quality, and service. Piccaso pizza has shown me that You don’t have to be well-known to offer good food! This place is highly underrated.
This place can get very packed and a line formed down the street and around the corner in the evenings, so if you don’t see that hurry up and order before it does and consider yourself very lucky!! You can call them and I also ordered them online. I am very pleased as a reoccurring customer and highly recommend this...
Read moreWe were in the mood for pizza last night and randomly came across Picasso Pie and it did not disappoint. We ordered to go, and the food and customer service completely exceeded our expectations.
We got a 14" classic pepperoni pizza with jalapeño on top. With a side of mozzarella sticks and requested Nashville hot wings, but the owner, James, surprised us with mango habanero wings instead and they were incredible. Juicy, meaty (way more than Wingstop or BWW), and packed with flavor and just the right level of heat. He even added a bit of pineapple on top of the wings, which somehow tied everything together perfectly. I’m picky about wings, but these were easily a 10/10, and they reheated beautifully the next day (today) without losing flavor or drying out.
James was also super friendly and genuinely passionate about what he does. He walked us through the sauces, ingredients, and even his cooking process. On top of that, he went way above and beyond he threw in extra mozzarella sticks, an extra wing, two more ranches, and blue cheese on the house. That kind of thoughtful, generous gesture made the whole experience feel incredibly personal and welcoming.
The pizza was also a solid 10/10 cooked just right, not greasy, and it held together perfectly. I ate five slices back-to-back. Mozzarella sticks were okay (about a 5/10 for me a bit overcooked), and I wasn’t a huge fan of the ranch (not very creamy), but honestly, those were small details. The wings and pizza are where Picasso Pie really shines.
That said, if you have any issues sitting down for a while, injuries, or just prefer more comfortable seating, be aware that the place is pretty small. The floor is slightly sloped, and the chairs have a bit of a “slidey” feel to them. It’s not a dealbreaker but something to keep in mind.
Bottom Line: Picasso Pie just became my new go-to for wings and pizza. James clearly cares about his craft, and it shows in every detail from the food to the service. Definitely worth...
