wonderful little French bakery/café in downtown LA that made a near perfect spot to stop for lunch after visiting the Central Library. Also a location on Beverly BLVD. Wood, red brick, and steel interior décor stylishly designed creates a feeling of wanting to linger a while. Open early to start the day with breakfast items (benedicts, omelettes) espresso, and pastries, Oh, the pastries! You walk in and immediately your eye is drawn to the expansive display of gorgeous selections both sweet and savory. Scones, croissants, eclairs, tarts, etc. all looking delicious. And some perfect looking baguettes and other types of freshly baked bread to enjoy at home. The lunch menu includes sandwiches both hot and cold, quiche, salads, and an interesting sounding rice bowl option. We perused the menu for a little while, including the daily specials board, and placed our order at the counter. Having spent some time in France, we discovered the pleasure of a simple baguette sandwich with brie and ham. This was my wife’s choice. I love a good quiche and the choice du jour was ham & mushroom. As a side to compliment my quiche I chose an order of ratatouille-a French cooked vegetable dish. By the way, they do serve wine here also but it may be only during certain hours of the day. Not sure on that.
We found a table easily and waited for our selections to arrive. And they did quickly. The baguette sandwich looked great but unlike the large majority of these we have enjoyed this one included a large leaf of romaine. This added a bit of extra crunch but not much more. Unnecessary in our opinion. The bread was fabulous, exterior crunchy with a soft slightly sour interior. A baguette to remember. The ham and the brie went with it perfectly. My wife was very pleased. I am a bit different than most in that I prefer my quiche cold or at room temp (it’s a texture thing) rather than warmed. This piece was truly delicious. Great smooth eggy filling with good quantity of filling. Crust maybe a bit dry but still well made. Nothing left but a few crumbs. Unfortunately, the ratatouille was a big miss on this day. I’ve had it many times, including in France, and this was unrecognizable as the dish I know. The normally chunky vegetables, which you can identify when looking, appeared to have been run through a Cuisinart and thoroughly churned into a slightly stringy mix. Once I tasted it the disappointment was complete as it tasted off, as if the dish had been around a bit too long. I was able to have a very pleasant conversation with the manager who offered any and all options to rectify the situation-I chose a refund.
The dessert choice here today was a delectable looking raspberry tart-fresh berries perched on top of a light cream filling in a shortbread style crust. Every bite was wonderful. Wish I’d chosen to buy one to take with. I will say that if you enjoy French pastry or a slice of French style café culture this spot should fill the bill when visiting Los Angeles. It’s going to be a staple of our dining whenever we...

Read moreA little bit of Paris in the heart of downtown Los Angeles!
Climbing vines on Rue de Honore patio, orange metal tables with flowers on the patio outside underneath a dark green awning, wine store, baquettes and French bread, baked goods and pastries, exquisite packaged deserts on display and in the cases, black and white photos of Parisian life, this casual dining place makes you feel at home from the moment you walk in. The aroma of baked bread permeates the place, along with other great food aromas.
It is an inviting and warm casual place that is a celebration of the food of Parisian life. Serving breakfast and lunch, their menu includes artisan bread, viennoiseries (morning pastry) patisserie (fine pastry), verrines (yogurt). The cafe menu includes hot and cold sandwiches, salads, tartines and several hot egg dishes. There offer bottled sparkling water, hot tea and coffee, beer and of course, wine.
It is great place to take a load off, enjoy a coffee, pastry, sandwich or omelette, sit at fireplace on rainy cold day or do some people watching on the patio. There is a wine rack near the back, you may enjoy a glass with your meal, or buy bottle and other wines for later. It is reasonably priced, the service is quick and there is a great vibe.
You may order online and get 10% discount (information at website and on take out menus), but best experience is to dine in. It is busy at usual meal times, but if you can, try the off peak hours for even better experience.
I have grown fond of the Parisian omelette (with mushroom and spinach on bed of greens), croissants and tarts. All flavors and croissant offerings are flaky and fresh, the tart sublime, but there are a few specialty pastries that I want to try. Looking forward to my...
