If you’re looking for one of the most iconic whiskey bars in Downtown Los Angeles, Seven Grand is the spot. I’ve been to quite a few bars in DTLA, but nothing really compares to the energy, selection, and vibe that Seven Grand brings to the table. Whether you’re a whiskey connoisseur or just someone looking for a fun night out with friends, this place hits all the marks.
First off, the ambiance is unreal. It has this classic, old-school speakeasy feel with dim lighting, leather couches, pool tables, and a rustic, vintage design that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into another era. You can tell they’ve put effort into creating a unique space that mixes upscale with laid-back energy. It’s cozy, but still lively.
But what REALLY separates Seven Grand is their insane whiskey selection. I’m talking hundreds of options — from well-known brands to rare bottles you’ve probably never heard of. Bourbon, Scotch, Japanese whiskey, Irish whiskey, you name it — they’ve got it behind the bar. The bartenders here actually know their stuff, too. It’s not your average bar where they rush your order — the staff here takes their time to walk you through recommendations based on your taste preferences. I’ve discovered a few new favorites thanks to their guidance.
The live music nights are also a vibe. There’s nothing like sipping on a quality old fashioned or whiskey neat while listening to live jazz or blues right in the heart of downtown. It adds a whole other layer to the experience.
They also have a whiskey society membership for anyone who’s really passionate about expanding their knowledge, doing tastings, and getting access to special events. Definitely worth checking out if you plan to come often.
On weekends, it can get busy, but the crowd is always chill and friendly — no pretentious energy here, just people enjoying good drinks and a good time. If you want to avoid the wait, I recommend coming earlier in the evening.
All in all, Seven Grand is a Downtown LA staple. Great whiskey, knowledgeable bartenders, good music, cool decor, and a top-tier vibe. If you’re in LA and appreciate quality drinks with character, this place is a must-visit.
Five stars all day. Cheers to Seven Grand! 🥃

The vibe of this place is kind of elevated-hunting-lodge meets artisan-LA-mixology; there's taxidermy, there's pool tables, there's whiskey. All things whiskey, prepared by bartenders and bar backs who are experts in their craft. They serve other types of alcohol as well, but their bourbon, scotch, etc drinks are what makes this place so special. The primary bar is in the front, and if its not closed for a private event/tasting, Bar Jackalope also serves a slightly limited version of the what the main bar serves. Its just through the back to the right.
Location: the bar itself is above the Mas Malo restaurant (and accessed through a shared entrance), so once inside the entrance of the restaurant, they'll check your ID and you'll follow the steps up to the right to actually enter Seven Grand.
Prices: are comparable with other upscale bars downtown, you're gonna pay at least $12-14 for a drink although they offer an incredible happy hour (it changes from time to time, but almost always has artisan cocktails in the $6-12 range). Possibly the best Old Fashioned I've ever had.
Seating: there's the main bar seating as well as a couple high tops/booths. Definitely a large space so lots of standing room, but if you're coming during peak hours on the weekends, seating is scarce.
Vibe: relatively casual, there's almost always live music on the weekends, pool tables (x2), and what used to be a semi-open patio that allowed smoking. Although the patio area is still part of the bar, its no longer open air and they do not allow smoking. Service is amazing, even on nights where they're slammed bartenders will answer questions and help you select a cocktail. Dress code is fluid, I've worn jeans but have also had a drink before heading out to Hollywood in a dress and heels.
**Dress code note: shorts are not permitted (on gentleman period, ladies you could probably get away with a dressier version of shorts, just not cut offs), and no sports logos on clothing. Don't ask me why but I've seen people turned away...
Read moreShort version: Dress code, excellent whiskey bar in the back, a bit pretentious. Probably won’t be back. The juice just wasn’t worth the squeeze for me.
Longer: Traveling for work, limited wardrobe with me, but I was told to wear long pants, which I did. I was told by the bouncer they were too baggy (guess I’ve lost some weight), but as I was meeting some friends, I just turned around and figured I would meet my friends at the next place, at which the bouncer let me in, but with a warning that I better dress better next time. Thanks. Honestly had it not been for the fact that I was meeting a friend I hadn’t seen in 8 years, I would’ve just skipped this place altogether. Im way past the point in my life where I get super dressed up.. for a bar.. that claims their dress code is casual.. anyway…..
I walk in and there’s nobody there. I walk up the stairs, there are two bros at the bar. That’s it. I walk to the back into the whiskey bar.. there’s 3 people there, my 3 friends. We sit, we drink one each, then all look at each other and say “Different bar? Different bar.”
5 of 5 stars for the selection and service: The bartender in the whiskey room was very knowledgeable and friendly. They had a really good selection, including some rare items.
Atmosphere: 3 of 5 stars. Outside the whiskey room it felt like a regular dive bar but with a very pretentious crowd.
Bouncer: 1 of 5 stars. The gatekeeper of fashion needs to dial it back a bit. Ultimately we never got into anything, he was just very rude and condescending, especially since I didn’t argue the dress code and just turned and walked away, only for him to yell back “I’ll make an exception this once!” .. yeah cause the bar was empty… and yeah I won’t be back, cause it wasn’t my...
