Layang Layang used to be super popular with multiple branches but now the Milpitas one is the only one left.
Compared to many other Malaysian/Singaporean restaurants here in the Bay Area this is definitely one of the upper echelon.
The Hainan chicken is really good but it's super super annoying that they constantly run out so if you want to eat it you may have to call ahead to make sure they reserve it for you.
The Roti Canai is also tasty and freshly made. I like that you get a completely different flavor as you devour it because it goes from chewy to crispy as it cools.
Coffee ribs is not as good as another place I've had but decent.
The seafood in a nest is so so. Sizzling beef is tender. What I think they should improve on is Singaporean chili prawns which is too sweet and not as good as I've had in Singapore. I wish they have chili crab or black pepper crab but I guess the lack of the Sri Lanka Crab may be why.
They made Chow kway Teow non spicy which took away the soul of the dish. I wish they didn't.
I do like the pearl mee (mouse tail noodle too)
Once again I wish they would offer more Hainan chicken especially letting you choose leg or wing portion. They Chicken Rice needs improvement as it's not aromatic or flavorful.
Service is good as they have more waiters than most Asian places so you can get someone to help you with things but the place itself is just a space with some Southeastern decoration.
The following is from my review before:
I used to come here often before the pandemic and also when it used to also have another location in Cupertino so I'm glad I get to try it again. The food is still good and if you miss Malaysian/Singaporean food this is probably the most authentic and down to earth restaurant to have it. I love the thin roti, the hainan chicken, and chow kueh teow (pan fried noodle). In fact almost all the fried noodles are good especially the mouse tail...
Read moreWhile yelping for "food", I came across a Malaysian listing and was intrigued enough to try it out. Stopped by here on a late Saturday afternoon, and got a table without any issues.
To start with, we ordered some beers, Roti Canai, and a Mango Salad. The Mango Salad had a good bite, was tangy, and had a delish sauce to go with it. Roti Canai was standard stuff that you can pretty much get in any south asian restaurant.
For entrees, we got the Veggie Kung Pao, Mee Goreng Noodles and Layang Layang Prawn. They don't come with any sides so we ordered a couple bowls of rice as well. The Veggie Kung Pao had a nice sweet and spicy gravy, and the veggie meat was decently flavorful. The Mee Goreng noodles had an unusual, but quite an appetizing taste. The noodles are a bit thick, kinda like spaghetti but went with the preparation. The Layang Layang Prawn was a bit disappointing, the prawns came with skin and the gravy was basically stir fried chilies. It wasn't all that bad, but I personally did not vibe with the dish.
For dessert, we got the Ice Kacang. The portion size is huge and one of these is enough to satisfy sugary cravings for three regular sized humans. It is primarily shaved ice that has been topped with a rosy syrup, and stuffed with jelly, corn and red bean. For us it was a novel concoction and we enjoyed it a lot. Would definitely recommend getting one, if only for your...
Read moreI visited an old friend and his family in the silicon valley area in early July 2019. Naturally, we combined our catching-up with a little feast.
He took me to this place located at a strip mall. The name Layang Layang means kite, the kind I used to fly when I was a young kid. So, that was a already good start.
We did the Asian style - order a variety of different dishes and everyone gets to sample everything. Chow Kueh Teow was delicious. Mind you, the traditional recipe calls for lard to saute the noodle, shrimp, squid, scallion, egg concoction. KangKung Belacan belongs to the acquired taste category if you've never ventured beyond your standard Chick Fil a. It's a simple Asian spinach with belacan, a special paste made from shrimp, not simply the fleshy part but the whole thing. That's how it gets its strong, memorable aroma and taste. Beef Rendang is a dish worthy of trying if that's your first visit. You might fall in love with it.
As for desserts, try the Ice Kacang (a better rendition of Italian ice. Marco Polo may have brought that back to Italy). Lastly, do try the Cendol. This is something unique. The coconut sugar is something corn-syrup fed people will find different, in an...
