This is the most disappointing restaurant with worst service I've ever been to in Manhattan.
We found steel scrubber in paella. In this case, the manager skillfully took away the evidence and proposed two options: let us wait ANOTHER 35 mins to remake; give us a discount. Considering we had already waited 35 mins for this paella, who would choose to wait another half hour? So we took the second option. When I asked what the discount was, he gave an ambiguous answer, "MAYBE a discount on the total or free for this dish".
However, when we checked, we found that the manager had only discounted this dish by 20% (~$24) and claimed it was the biggest discount he could give for us. We were dissatisfied with his perfunctory approach and asked more discount or remake this one, which he declined on the grounds that we had already "enjoyed the food and service" and "their ingredients and labor are expensive". He said he can give us a small dessert. A lady in our party decried his insincere attitude for the mistake, saying "there was no service". He felt these words insulted his restaurant and told us to sign the order or he would "TAKE ACTIONS".
To be honest, I didn't think this is a big deal originally. But what really started to piss me off was the manager's attitude towards customers. Since it was late and we students needed to go to school next day, we signed the bill and even gave a little tips to the other restaurant staffs. But because when my friend was negotiating with him, he chose to turn a deaf ear and ignored her. So in the end, I told him that I hoped he would respect ladies more in the future. He knew he was in the wrong, and after seeing that we had signed the bill, he said to me: "I don't want to talk with you. Please leave! YOU ARE NOT WELCOME! DONT COME AGIAN! YOU DISGUST ME!" I really can't believe that a restaurant manager would talk to customers like this, and it hurt our feelings.
During the whole process, I could clearly feel that the manager's attitude gradually deteriorated before and after he received the evidence and before and after the check. I guess he saw that we were young international students wearing glasses like nerds who didn’t want to cause trouble, so he became more aggressive. And I think the price of this dish is not unaffordable to this manager, he just wants to bully us young people. I know their reasonably good food will continue to attract customers, but if you read this review and know what happened to us, please think twice before going: is it necessary to suffer possibly psychological...
Read moreI came here with a group of 10 with a reservation, and had a great experience! The service was great, and the food came out pretty quickly (other than the paella which takes longer), and there were some really good items. Watch out for the 3% surcharge when paying with card (the menu prices listed include a 3% cash discount).
Great, would get again Scallops ($23): This dish is pricey, but the scallops are flawless. They are huge, perfectly cooked, and have great flavor. Octopus ($27): I really liked the cook on this octopus. It was crispy on the outside but very tender on the inside. Bone marrow ($19): The bone marrow is bursting with savory flavor and has great texture.
Good, might get again Wild mushroom croquettes ($17): These were very popular with the group. Paella del mar ($78): This certainly has the most premium seafood items I've ever seen in a paella (and also the most expensive pricetag). The octopus is excellent. The other seafood is a bit overcooked relative to their non-paella counterparts (eg the scallop, shrimp, and mussels). The rice flavor is mostly tomato, so it's not my favorite in terms of rice flavor. The rice is a bit al dente.
Wouldn't get again Brussels sprouts ($17): Mostly sweet flavor, not crispy. Gambas al ajillo ($22): Only 6 shrimp, very little flavor, not great shrimp texture. Patatas bravas ($16): The potato wasn't very crispy. Tuna tostada ($19): Pretty forgettable. Wild mushrooms ($18): Lacking flavor. Mussels ($19): Too sour. Cauliflower ($16): Lacking flavor.
Overall I thought some items were misses/lacking in flavor, but some of the dishes were really nice. I would probably choose Boqueria over this place, but there are some dishes that Bazar does better. There are some tapas places that require a prix fixe menu (starting at $65pp) for groups of 10+, so I appreciated that we were able to order a la carte and keep the total (including tax and tip)...
Read moreThis was the official NYC restaurant/bar my friend stopped at on our trip. It was one of the few that was open that late on a Wednesday night. We actually came in about 30 minutes before the kitchen closed, so we rush-ordered whatever looked the most delicious. Since it was late at night and only a few people were in there, the restaurant was lit up with minimal lights, giving it a very cool, vibe-y feel. Because this was a tapas bar, all the dishes we ordered were shareables. The food came out fast and the waitress was nice and check-in on us a few times throughout as well.
Roasted Beef Bone Marrow w/ Dijon Mustard & Garlic Bread (2/5): This one was a bit disappointing. I love bone marrow, and it's one of those dishes that I would immediately order if available on the menu, as I did here. Unfortunately, the was barely any marrow. The photo looks a bit deceiving because it was only a thin layer of marrow on the bone. The bread was also too hard for my preference. Usually, if there was more marrow to spread, it would pair well with a crispy thin bread slice. However, in this instance, there was barely any marrow and the bread was overly hard.
Wild Mushroom Croquettes w/ Truffle Aioli (4/5): This was a yummy bite. I thought it was slightly greasy for my preference. The truffle aioli paired so well with the crispy croquette. My friend absolutely loved it as is.
Baby Lamb Chops w/ Mint Mustard Coulis (5/5): Incredibly cooked. A slight crust and the meat was so flavorful and soft to the bite. Not much to say here. It was delicious.
Seared Sesame-Crusted Tuna w/ Ponzu & Yellow Sriracha Aioli (5/5): The tuna crust was perfectly seared and paired so well with the aioli and ponzu. The tuna tasted fresh too. I love the tanginess of the sauces and the tartness from a squeeze of lemon...
