Empire City Gourmet Deli — Restaurant in New York

i live 2 mins walking distance from this spot, i frequent here and have given them my business but it’s such a shame that they’ll go an extra mile to lie to get your money. they change their prices on the fly & then tell you that “it says on the menu” so they’re allowed to do that… meanwhile, the menu in front of your face above the kitchen reads completely different prices than what they charge you. they also NEVER charge you for the item you are purchasing, their screen will always read “manual order” no matter what you get and a random price will pop up next to it.

all i’m going to say is, the menu that THEY HAVE in their bodega said $2.99 for a side of home fries… but at the counter they said it was $7.50. tell me how that makes any sense. Then they said “well we changed the menu.” well when did you change the menu when the menu that you still have up on your screen is reading $2.99 and you’re charging me $7.50?

We ordered cheesy fries and a fajita but when we got to our hotel everything was wrong. We had two cheese burgers, a burrito, and two fries with nothing on them. So we brought it back because I couldn’t eat anything due to an allergy. The cook screamed at us, said we were “lucky” for getting the food we didn’t order, said that it was our fault because we didn’t know what we ordered when we had to correct him 3 different times for the same items and even pointed to the items on the menu. He refused to give a refund and insists on trying to belittle you in front of the store. After several minutes of arguing and correcting him he finally somewhat understood and gave us only the cheese fries with bacon. The cheese was very clumpy and thick. I would have preferred something from a can. The cook is very aggressive and it is not the best first impression for an out of stater. I will never be coming back here even as a last resort. I’d rather eat something off the subway than be belittled for an allergy I have and couldn’t eat anything they provided as well as being overpriced. 40 dollars for a sandwich, two cheese fries and two drinks. I’m frustrated because this is place is open 24/7 and it’s so close to my home. This place is a huge scam. It looks like a great deli from the outside (clean, good brands, stocked etc.) but it’s just scammers trying to fleece tourists.

I’m born and raised here and I’m all too familiar with deli guys making up prices on the spot. This place takes it to a new level. It’s so messed up because this place could have 5 stars and be poppin’ all day and night with customers if they weren’t such dishonest people. Just make decent sandwiches and sell them at your advertised prices! It’s not that hard! Build relationships with the locals in your community. I would come here literally every day twice a day if they were good guys. Instead this place is my absolute last resort and I have to be extra diligent about watching them punch in the prices.

The other day they tried to charge me $18 for a bagel with cream cheese, a bag of chips, and a sparkling water. I walked out. Those items should cost $9 AT MOST and would only cost like $7-8 at normal delis. Seriously...
