My mom loves the durian roll cake, so flavorful and soft. It wasn’t too sweet which makes it the perfect cake for Asian parents! I planned to order it as a birthday cake for my moms birthday dinner. When checking out online, there was only one pickup location available, which was further and would take me more time to get to. To see my options, I called the east village location if I could somehow place my order with them for pickup as it was the best location for me. They said I could place my order online and then email them to switch pickup locations. So this is what I did, 3 days before my intended pickup. I get no response within the 48 hours I was told I would get a response by. I call the store but no one picked up and could not leave a voicemail as the inbox was full. I DM them on Instagram and finally receive a response. It prompted them to check for my original inquiry and also emails me back that they will switch my pickup as requested. The day comes and my sister goes to pick up our order. Well the store did not have my order available here. It was available at the location I checked out with online. One of the items ordered was still available so they could give me that but not the durian roll cake which was really the whole reason why I placed the order. They suggested we could either go to the original to pick up or they could do it if we waited. There was no way to make it to the birthday dinner on time with either option. They offered a refund or to pick a different cake. My sister picked a different cake (calamansi passion fruit that ended up being too sweet for everyone) as we still needed a birthday cake for the celebration.
They tried their best in the situation and even offered some complimentary pastries but I’m still extremely annoyed. I don’t know what happened or why the pickup location was not changed as they said they would do. Huge disappointment because I called and emailed to make sure this was all possible and they failed on their end to deliver. If it wasn’t possible to begin with, I would have arranged more time for my sister or I to go pick up at the original location. To agree and then not deliver on their end is really really frustrating.
Everyone kept asking at dinner where the durian cake was and what happened with it. Everyone was looking forward to it after we had told them about it after trying it the first time. My mom was also really disappointed with no durian cake as well and it was replaced with a cake too sweet for our taste. Not sure if we’d come back again after this.
Edit: the owners reached out to me a couple times to make up for what has happened and i really appreciate the effort they took to make a good impression again. Updating this on my own,...
Read moreMy partner ordered a cake last month for a birthday party. The cake was scheduled to arrive May 16th (Friday) for a weekend birthday party - it was ordered & scheduled weeks in advance. The delivery got rescheduled two days before the original delivery date to Monday, the 19th, missing the party altogether.
With that being said, I understand that delivery is outside Lady Wong's control, and this is not why this review is a two-star review. The cake arrived late, damaged, and completely defrosted (see images below). The black sesame cake is now a bluish color. It did not look edible (I am not risking food poisoning), and we had to toss the whole thing away. I requested a refund since we received a product that is completely dissatisfactory, and quite frankly, basically a pile of trash that we have to go through the hassle of tossing away.
The total that I paid was 119 - cake, delivery & candles. The refund that they were willing to provide was only $68, which was solely the price of the cake. Lady Wong's customer service claims that since they don't receive the delivery fee (it's used to pay for UPS for 2-day delivery), they cannot refund the money to me. They will only refund it to me if UPS decides to refund them.
To me, this is a completely unacceptable customer experience. As a customer, I was paying for an overall customer experience with the expectation of a cake that was supposed to be edible and arrive on time for a birthday party. I received none of that, yet I still have to pay for the price of the shipment and the candles (which is also now totally useless since the cake and candles both arrived late, missing the party). I don't want to tell Lady Wong how to run their business model, but refunding the customer for only ~57% of the total payment when the customer did not receive a functional product left a bad taste in my mouth. Why should I, as the customer, pay for the consequences of a carrier that you, as the vendor, chose?
The only reason why I left this a two-star and not a 1 star was because they were quick to respond, provided a refund, and they offered a 20$ gift card. With that being said, this is probably the last time I will order from them. I know their cake is good (when it's edible), but as a customer, I was deeply dissatisfied with...
