After 10 p.m. another chef takes over the kitchen and this place becomes Sanshiro Ramen. I work in hospitality, and often at night, so I have only been after hours and this chef's 3 ramen specialties are amazing! I love the shio ramen, it's delicate and subtle and a good late summer choice. The shoyu, well, I don't really like shoyu ramen so it has nothing to do with Sanshiro I'm always biased against it. The shoyu tastes as good as any I've had but...not my bag. The tsuke-men however, is a rich experience. You get a bowl of hot ramen with three flavors of dipping sauce on the side and it is definitely an 'empty stomach' kind of meal! It'll take you a bit longer to finish because you'll want to savor the rich flavors of each broth. I'd pair this one with a light, crisp sake to cleanse your palette between bites. But if you prefer one of Teppen's ramen styles, the night chef offers some of those too. As I said, I'm a night bird so I've only done the Sanshiro flavors but when you come with a friend after work, you can have a great time. A quiet meal, a please conversation, a nice meal. When crowded, there's a bit of a wait (I think the guy is working alone in the kitchen. It's just him and his waitress.) but...
Read moreWent in for lunch right at opening. The place was empty. I was politely greeted by an astute waitress/hostess. Sat at the ramen bar and was promptly given water. This was the end of my feelings of relief and inspiration. Ordered shoyu ramen, gyudon, and a Sapporo. The beer was good, the gyudon was good, but I would never call what was served to me "shoyu ramen". There was nothing "shoyu ramen" about it, but the flavor was tasty and the tea egg was correct. The meat was overcooked and the onions were undercooked. I would give a higher rating, but another server (wearing a baseball cap indoors for some unknown reason) asked me if I was finished even though my bowls and drink were not empty. The place was empty, so being rushed was highly offensive. Lastly, there was no obvious posting about cash-only payment before I ordered. This means that they deliberately withheld that information. Not that I didn't have the money, but a business not explicitly stating what they accept as payment before rendering services is shady and leaves a bad aftertaste. Not sure if I...
Read moreAnother day in the office, another opportunity to explore the lunch scene of midtown east. For todays outing, someone had the fantastically bright idea to get ramen whilst sporting our finance bro uniforms… I foolishly bought into the idea.
Of course we waltzed in bright eyed and bushy tailed; proven ramen enjoyers. ai ordered the tan tan men. A delicious sesame forward dish i had first tried in the great small city of Spokane not too long ago. Teppen’s ramen was delicious, i hadn’t any complaints. The broth was rich the flavors were harmonized beautifully in the oriental orchestra.
My dismal mood to start this review was no other fault than the drip. The drip, the splash of spicy sesame broth on my freshly dry cleaned dress shirt. Tragedy. I had managed to make it the rest of the day avoiding detection,...
