Because I am a decent human being and I want all small businesses to succeed, I am giving this place 5 stars. That being said, the people who run it are among the rudest and most unappreciative people I've encountered at any run-of-the-mill deli in NYC, and I've been to dozens of them. The staff screamed at me multiple times when I attempted to walk upstairs to the seating area simply to check if I was in the right place where my friends were waiting for me. I told them I was planning on eating there, but that wasn't good enough. Then they screamed again when I tried a second time and said I should leave. It was comical actually because the upstairs seating area is about as welcoming as the Penn Station men's room. I assume they are concerned about the homeless hanging out or people loitering. Also worth noting is the restrooms are coded entry, so only customers can use them. Anyway, I have a job where I could encourage hundreds, maybe thousands of people to have lunch here. But I will not be doing that anytime soon. In fact, I won't be doing that ever. On the upside, the pay-by-the-pound food variety and quality absolutely meets or exceeds expectations in this particular category of NYC delis. Just buy your food before going...
Read moreI really love this place and am so glad I found it. It was really close to my hotel and I came for dinner twice - once normal time and once really late at night. Both times I got the hot buffet. Their buffet is very impressive. It is very clean and huge, well stocked with tons of delectable choices. I ate there both times. The seating area upstairs is also clean and well air-conditioned. Food was amazing and really fresh even when I got it late night. It is $12.99/lb which is very reasonable. First time I spent $30 and second I went wild and spend $40. Believe me I got a ton of food. So well worth it and a very relaxing place to eat. Loved the eggplant parmagan, mashed potatoes and meatballs, ziti, fried fish etc. The staff was all also very kind. At late night you had some getting lots of food like me and many just stopping for a drink or juice or something for they are a grocery as well. Line always moved fast. Next time I want to get a bagel and try one of their sandwiches. Really really great food option to eat there...
Read moreWe stayed at the Hilton Garden in on 63 W 35th St and decided not to include breakfast in our stay, but rather find NYC deli’s and do it like the locals. We were not disappointed. We did find a good deli on our first day, but there was no seating and this was a requirement, me being on crutches from a sprained ankle, so running out of time, we went to McDonalds…Oh well. But! On the second day, we found Toast, situated between 35th and 6th Avenue. What a treat! It covers two floors. The ground floor offering freshly cooked or prepared meals and smoothies, to a hot and cold buffet and and upstairs dining area. It is beautifully laid out and inviting. The team are ruthlessly efficient and friendly and you can see why, this place is busy, catering for all manner of New Yorkers starting their day. All in all, this is a great alternative to hotel paid breakfasts. It is cheaper, friendlier, and more immersive. We went there 3 days straight. Visit...
