There’s a certain nostalgia that hits you when you walk into Abby’s Legendary Pizza in Newport, the kind that takes you back to simpler times, when a perfect slice of pepperoni or Hawaiian could make your whole week. I’ve been eating Abby’s since I was a kid, when their crispy crusts and gooey cheese were something I craved as much as summer vacations. The pepperoni with its salty punch, the Hawaiian with that beautifully strange dance of sweet pineapple and savory ham—back then, it was everything.
These days, I no longer eat meat, but Abby’s has remained a constant. Their Jalapeno, Pineapple, and Feta pizza has become my personal favorite, a combination that shouldn’t work but absolutely does. The heat from the jalapeno plays against the brightness of the pineapple, while the feta adds a creamy, salty layer that ties it all together. It’s a bold move for a place known for its classic pies, but one that shows Abby’s still knows how to evolve while staying true to its roots.
There’s a sadness, though, in the absence of the old salad bar—a relic from another time, when salad was as much about stacking the plate as high as possible as it was about the freshness. But even though that’s gone, the in-house salads remain a quiet revelation—simple, but packed with flavor, and proof that not all things from the past should stay there.
Abby’s may not be the newest pizza joint in town, but for those of us who’ve grown up with it, it’s still home, one...
Read moreSept 3rd 2022 Abby's Newport, OR: After 45 minute wait in near-empty store received literally half-baked Italian Sausage pizza. Pizza had no crust BTW. ALSO, I'd ordered tomatoes as second topping – when they showed me the pie I asked where the tomatoes were – they quickly backpedaled saying 'tomatoes come on the side' (for utterly no discernable reason) – which MIGHT have been less of a transparent LIE if they'd handed me the pie AND side tomatoes. THEN when I got home & took a bite noticed sour taste – saw dough wasn't cooked thru & cheese not even melted – flakes of shredded cheese all still had individual squiggle shapes. At least after I drove all the way back and reported the monstrosity inedible they didn't hassle giving my money back... though it did beg the question just how routine such refunds ARE. BTW, the bent & battered women's room at this place is so cramped & tiny, if you're washing your hands at the sink the person in the stall INCHES behind you can't get out! Other issues: WAY overpriced. Same pizza $3 less (without discounts) AND edible, in 15 minutes, at Dominos. Also: when I asked for napkins Abby's handed me a wad of strip-style brown paper towels, the type that stack in an old-fashioned bathroom wall dispenser. Needless to say, won't be...
Read moreFirst time eating at an Abby’s. I’ll say the place is clean and the staff was friendly. Ambiance was family friendly. Wait time was quoted at 25 min and my order was done in 20. Thats fast! I ordered a giant size (16”) Abby’s special and 6 parmesan garlic bread sticks. This is thin crust style pizza. Total was $45. This is the most expensive pizza I’ve ever ordered at $39 for this pie. Visually it was made well, toppings were placed evenly and they were plentiful. Ingredients were quality. Flavor was good and the crust had the perfect level of aging/fermentation to give it that nice artisan flavor. My only complaint is that I’m a more crispy pizza guy and the middle was a little doughy for my personal liking. I would have liked a couple more minutes in the oven. But that’s hindsight or not knowing what to expect. The breadsticks with marinara were true breadsticks, like sliced off a loaf of bread and covered in cheese and garlic. Flavor was good, but I would have preferred a little crispier. If I order again I’d probably prefer the garlic knots over the breadsticks. Overall I didn’t have an expectation having not ever eaten at Abby’s. Pizza is a funny thing and everybody likes slightly different things. Abby’s checks all the boxes for a...
