I am so terrible about leaving reviews for anything, but this place was so wonderful that I had to sit down and say so.
First things first - to be honest, hubby and I thought the restaurant looked small when we parked. We assumed that we would be going in, ordering, and then finding a nice little lookout to stop and eat at. We were pleasantly surprised to find that it was much more spacious on the inside than we first thought. There's enough space between diners to make us comfortable about social distancing, staff were wearing masks and gloves. We haven't been out to eat a lot in the last year and their care in following covid requirements made us feel safe while dining in. (Thank heavens btw, I am getting tired of takeout!)
So we stayed to eat lunch there, and I'm so glad we did. The staff were warm, helpful and friendly. Plus, we got to enjoy our gyros while they were still warm, and the salad while it was still cool and crisp. And we would never have thought to order the hot tea that went perfectly with our lunch.
Which brings me to the food: we shared a Gyro Greek salad to start with. Hubby could not stop talking about how perfectly balanced it was - both the ingredients and the dressing. We ate every last bite! Then we enjoyed the regular gyro. Again - great balance of ingredients - they clearly excel at that. Not only that, but lately whenever I've had a gyro anywhere else, the pita is so bready - sometimes theres more pita than veggies or meat! Not in this case. The pita was thin and not bready. It held and didn't tear, and it was tasty but didn't take over the entire gyro. Yet again - perfect balance.
Normally when we go out to eat, I'll order an iced tea. They didn't have any, and I'm glad they didn't, because we ordered the Middle Eastern Hot Tea instead that we wouldn't have ordered otherwise. It was ginger, and even my husband (who doesn't really drink hot tea often) loved it! Again, it went perfectly with the meal and we drank the whole pot. Finally - we ordered dessert to go to take home to the kids. The owner was thoughtful enough to ask how far we were travelling and told us how to prepare the dessert when we got home. The dessert was called Kanafa, it had a sweet syrup and some chopped pistachio to put on top - it was very tasty. Everyone loved it.
Anyway, I seem to have written a book for my first google review, sorry. But this precious little Greek restaurant was worth the trouble. Hubby and I now have a favorite new place to go when we visit the coast. Which will be more often because this is now our favorite Greek...
Read moreWe were regular customers when they were located in a no-seating booth down on the bayfront, but after moving up along Hiway101 they have gotten much easier to access, and the ease of access and some sit-down dining has brought them a new customer base as well.
The older gentleman at the counter is very passionate and takes pride in his restaurant and the food and I totally understand why. He is the Sr. Member of this Father and Son management team, and the tasty food and desserts they are putting out will have you salivating well before you receive your order. Your mouth literally explodes with all the wonderful flavors and it's an assault on all your senses as you can taste the passion that went into perfecting the recipes and making the food.
The Shawarmas are available with Chicken, Beef, or Gyro meat and my wife routinely has the Chicken Shawarma which is going to knock your socks off! Just a handful of every day spices makes an incredible Chicken Shawarma marinade that infuses the chicken with exotic Middle Eastern flavors. The smell when this is cooking is insane!
The Gyro Guys have the best "classic" Gyros anywhere along Hiway101!!! The meat is perfectly cooked and tender; plus, they are very generous with the amount of meat in their gyros.
My extended family has sampled most of the menu and found it all to be Great food with generous portions. Mediterranean is one of the most flavorful ways to eat vegetarian if that is your goal.
Leave some room for the Desert Pastry's, as the things that the Gyro Guys can do with a little Phyllo Dough, some Honey, and a handful of chopped Pistachio and Walnuts are out of this world. Their baklava is perfect. Just imagine every baklava that you have ever tried before, with all the flaky layers of sticky honey sweetness and all the other deliciousness in between the layers of crispy flaky decadent phyllo dough, and theirs will soon come to mind. You won’t be able to pick a favorite without ordering the Pistachio Baklava, Kanafa Baklava, and the Burma Baklava together, and then sampling all three of those with a Middle Eastern Tea and enjoy being transported to the warm moist sea air of the Mediterranean Ocean if only for the moment.
Clearly, I give the Gyro Guys (Father and Son) my highest recommendations and they continue to be our “Go To” restaurant in Newport, although they have gotten larger and grown-up from their booth on the Bayfront, it is the same family recipes that they are so proud of, that has made them the best Mediterranean...
Read moreTo the owner, your son Moon is a very poor waiter & the meat was DRY as heck!. I've eaten many gyros, and this chicken and beef was the dryest I ever had. After ordering It took over 30 minutes to get served even though only 1 other table was waiting. Moon didn't write down our order. Then he eith put in our order wrong, or your chef doesn't listen. Made wrong so he sent it back. As a restaurant owner, I know it sucks to have food wasted by your staffs mistakes. What bothered us all more than the mistake after waiting a half hour, was your son's bad attitude. If that happened in one of my restaurants , I would have offered a free dessert or at least a sincere apology. As for the food, both Beef and Chicken were very DRY. tried the beef & chicken gyros. When Moon asked how the food was, we were honest and said the meats were very dry. To this he just asked if we wanted dessert. My suspicion is that it was several days old, or else you need a new cook. The seasoning & sauce flavors were actually not bad, and if you improve your meat it would be pretty good. However, due to your son's rude attitude and incompetent server skills, it was not a pleasant experience. Newport is a small town, and in 27 years I have seen many many restaurants come and go. My thoughts: Pay attention to the several reviews mentioning your son ruining their experience and dry meats. These are often locals who are key to your survival during the off season. Send Moon to college, I'm sure he's smart and most likely wishes to do something else, he doesn't belong at gyro guys.. then hire an experienced wait-person who will do a...
