As I pondered the vast expanse of a menu at this unassuming diner-on-the-freeway, I struggled to decide between a classic beef burger or a less-than-traditional salmon one. My gaze flowed over the endless pages like the ever-present mists from the nearby Pacific ocean. It was 25 minutes 'til closing, but the waitress patiently watched as I began to sweat from indecisiveness. Then I saw it. A terrifying menu option that threatened to unmake me: the heart attack burger. The anxiety had reached a fever pitch as I reckoned with the abject terror of this possibility, the bun of a contemporary hamburger forcibly replaced by not one but TWO grilled cheese sandwiches. My bones began to vibrate in fear, and just as I thought my time had come to an end, a faint voice called out to me in the back of my mind! It was the salmon. The last shimmer of sanity in my war-torn mind beckoned me back to the comfort of the mundane through my passion for fresh anadromous fish. I had my excuse to remain grounded in familiar reality and leave this flavorful hellscape behind. But my waitress still gazed upon me with confidence, as if she knew something I didn't. Her next words shattered any hope I had of leaving your place unchanged, for they would annihilate my tether to the world I one knew forever: "I could have then put the salmon on the heart attack, if you like" My fate was sealed. I spoke the forbidden tongue, and the terrible truth began to take shape in the fiery forge of the kitchen. I waited outside on the cold to have my peaceful perception of the world irrevocably destroyed. And when the fateful food finally arrived at my table, my mouth was uncontrollably agape. I stared in horror at the eldritch abomination that sat before me. I tried to shut it out, but my wide-open mouth did not obey. This dastardly dish was being my comprehension, I was the foulest fool the world have ever seen for creating it. I chose this fate, or at least I feel myself that. What little memory I hold of my prior life sometimes whispers to me in agony, that I didn't want this. But I now know the truth. ■□■Hail the Heart Attack Salmon Burger■□■ Pretty tasty though, not gonna lie. 5 stars

They say they were voted #1, and I can see why. I was greeted right away. Their staff were cheerful and efficient. The only reason I couldn't give it a 5 for service was there was an error with my order, and I had to drive 12 miles round trip to fix it. But they certainly did make it right. I ordered the cod & fries, with a cup of chowder and a side of coleslaw. The fish was good, the batter was light and the fish was moist & tender. I didn't get my fries, so I have no idea how they are, but I'm betting they're better than average. The coleslaw was the best I think I've ever had. I can't exactly say why, except it was dressed light, not in a cloying or thick dressing, and it had a very bright refreshing note to it. I suspect there's a touch of lemon juice in it, but I don't know. I didn't get my cup of chowder originally either, and it had been charged as a substitute for the fries instead of an addition. But when I returned to get it, I was given a bowl. The chowder was excellent. I feel it was better than the Crab shop in South Beach and Mo's. I know, sacrilege. But it is nicely savory, not overly thick or overwhelmed with chunks of potatoes. It had a lot of clams that were tender, and some were quite good-sized chunks. It also had a very pleasant buttery undertone in every bite without any butter added when served. All in all, I'd highly recommend the Newport Cafe and will definitely return to try their crab cakes, which I was told is one of their most ordered items. The only thing I'd offer as a caution is to ensure you're clear what you want to order and, if you take it to go, check it before you drive off.

I don't know how this place has nearly 5 stars. Awful, service, awful service, terrible food and high prices. Arrived around 230pm on Tuesday to order take out. Was one couple sitting inside and two couples outside. While waiting to order, the owner said something along the lines of "What of my stuff are you taking in that bag. Let me see it" to a Hispanic employee, grabbing his fanny pack size bag and shaking it. Employee didn't seem upset and both parties laughed so figured it was some, off colored inside joke. Ordered a chicken club with house fries, a bacon cheeseburger with house fries and a bowl of chowder. Was nearly $40. They said they would bring it to my car (asked the make, model and color) and said it would be about 10 minutes. After waiting nearly 40 minutes and seeing other tables who arrived at least 20 minutes after us, get served, I went inside to check. The owner was seated at the counter in the same spot as when I ordered but it was all new staff. They had to search for my order slip and then my food was ready pointing to 2 containers on the heat lamp table. I asked if they had been sitting there the whole time and the owner, with a very rude tone said, "They just came out". Got my food out to car and noticed the bread on chicken sandwich was burnt and fries were soggy and cold. Got it back to camp (3 min drive) and discovered the other side of sandwich bread was more burnt and so soggy it wa simpossible to pick up and inedible. There was barely any avocado on the sandwich either. DONT GO HERE. ZERO STARS

Woah, where to start 😳 Well let's start with the good & then we'll go to the bad. The good is we ordered a monte cristo & it was really good. Had turkey & ham which a lot of restaurants don't do the turkey, so that was a bonus. Another bonus was they actually have brown gravy. The bad... Gravy doesn't taste that good. Still glad they had it though & I would eat it again, just cuz it's brown gravy lol The worst is the 3 inch long gash I got while trying to pull my leg out from underneath their outside picnic tables. The bolt had a very sharp piece sticking out & it caught my foot ripping it open. It was quite deep & I really should have gone to ED to have it cleaned & assessed, possibly a tetanus shot but we're Canadian & didn't know if our extended coverage was for out of Country plus I had tetanus shot I. 2013 so good for another year. Husband went inside to ask for medical aid, but was only given 2 band-aids & a antiseptic wipe. Staff came out to look at my foot, but no employee or management on duty asked me if I was ok, apologized or did anything to help me. That really angered me. They are extremely lucky I don't sue them for this injury. I will be going to family physician once home in couple days though. Photos for details.

Food was ok, my server on the other hand could have been a little more polite. when I first walked in I was super thirsty after being on the road for nearly two and a half 3 hours so I asked if I could have a Pepsi to start and I was told no in a rude way I thought he was joking but apparently he wasn't. being there for about 15 minutes they finally came to get our drink order, I said actually I'm ready to order and he said I don't have a ticket in a snippy voice I said okay no problem I'll take a Pepsi. He came back 5 minutes later with he but did not have a order ticket, it was another 10 minutes before he took our order. and then my friend an i were clearly done with our food and they didn't walk up to see if we needed a bill. I would have given them a higher rating but the server was a creep, I don't think he even deserve the $6 tip we left him on that overpriced food, I feel bad for anyone that orders the 8 lb monster burger. The only reason I left a 3-star rating is because the food was ok , but reading reviews that's a rarity at this place.

Stopped in as we have seen it super packed 2 days in a row as we drive by and decided that we absolutely had to stop for breakfast today. The building is small so be prepared for a possible wait. It is 24/7 though! I had the crab omelet which was delicious and massive, and the kids portions are quiet large. None of our kids successfully finished. The denver omelet and the minced meat scramble were also soooo tasty and delicious and super filling. The wait staff is very kind and helpful and the whole place is surronded with friendly smiling faces. Just off the 101 makes it easy to locate and find as well as it has a super distinctive easy to find look about it. 10/10 no complaints and would absolutely eat here again! Give it a try next time you're in town. Also don't be scared to ask the staff for ideas on places to go and visit and things to do! Everyone is quiet helpful and we found a new favorite quiet beach spot because of this! Thanks for the amazing meal!
