We have been coming regularly to Koon Thai for about 7 months now. It is as good and fresh as the first time we visited. We do not live local but will visit at least 2 times a month if we can. Here is our scoop on this delightful Thai eatery:
Atmosphere is cozy, green and clean. Less than 12 tables. Rattan and gorgeously happy Pothos plants. Mostly tables for 4 that can be pushed together for larger parties. Menu is extensive. Small bites like spring rolls or pot-stickers. Salads, like our absolute favorite Papaya Salad. Curries, Pad, and regional dishes. Desserts - Mango Sticky Rice. Our experience with the food.
Thai Red Curry - rich and flavorful with loads of chicken and lots of good slightly crunchy vegetables (just the way they should be!).
3 Flavors Curry - unique taste and mirrors the Red curry in quality. Got the chicken version and it was tasty!
Spicy Eggplant - My absolute favorite. I’ve had both the chicken version and the tofu version. I prefer the tofu version because it lets the eggplant dominate the palate and is extremely tasty with its slightly sweet, yet umami flavor with bursts of Thai basil flavor. Carrots cut perfectly to remain some tooth to the bite. Broccoli, onions cooked but not cooked down. Eggplant has some smokiness from the cook. I crave this dish when I’m not in the area! Sooooo good. Chicken is also good, but I prefer this dish with the tofu. Medium is a good spice level for people who like a little warming spice. Not uncomfortable. Serving size is generous. I like that there is enough rice to go with the portions.
Thai Spicy Basil - just like the above Eggplant is delicious. This goes well with the chicken. The dish has crunchy veggies like green (long) beans and peppers, onions. The sauce is a dance on the tongue. Slightly sweet yet savory.
Papaya Salad - Thai Style. where do I begin!? If you haven’t had this Thai staple, you must try it. Green papaya (slightly crunchy fibrous with a tiny bit of tang, similar to consistency of radish strips, no heat though), tomatoes, onions cooked a bed of lettuce. Dressed in a slightly acidic and sweet sauce of citrus, red chilis, peanuts and LOVE. So fresh, healthy and delicious.
Pad Thai - Savory, umami, nutty and flavorful noodle dish. Generous portions. Delicious. I’d get this if I didn’t like the other dishes I’ve had better. If Pad Thai is your thing, it’s good! Had chicken when we’ve had it! Hearty meal if you’re hungry.
Drunken Noodles - wider noodles than the Pad Thai. Got the chicken version and it was tasty. Vegetables sprinkled in, generous meat. A very hearty meal if you’re hungry.
Chicken Larb - a fresh salad with fried chicken bites and tangy dressing made with chili, lime, and fish sauce. Great for when you’re in the mood for something different.
Drinks Hibiscus tea - sweet, tart and refreshing Thai tea - authentic, sweet and bitter drink. Great with boba!
We love this restaurant and will drive out of our way to go here (50+ miles). It is that good. We have traveled to Thailand and know what good authentic fresh Thai food should taste like and we have found that this is the most authentic for us in the area of the places we have tried.
Hopefully we will...
Read moreSawadeeka to pretty good thai food 😋 This place is located pretty near the Orlando International Airport, and looks like a small family business that gives off a really cozy vibe with tasteful decor. That's not the only tasteful thing - the flavourful food we ordered felt like eating dishes similar to the ones served in Thailand which we travel often to for good food.
What we ordered: Anchan cha manao with pandan ( haha I hope the name is not butchered by me) which is Butterfly pea+pandan+lime tea drink! Also called "magical purple drink" by the owners' daughter 😄 coz it initially comes as a blueish drink . Try stirring it and see the "magic" 😉 😆
Larb (ground pork ) Aroi mak mak ! loved the seasoning; a well balanced dish with nicely cooked pork and fresh veggies as a starter salad !
3-flavours curry set Wow the portion is substantial as the bowl is loaded with ingredients! The curry was good but slightly on the sweet side. Pair it with the rice that comes with it. Heavenly match 😍
Nam prik king It's a dry red curry version with chicken and long beans. Good amount of vegetables and goes well with rice too 😋 frankly we had hoped for it to be more fiery hot and spicy but it is toned down , probably to suit the masses.
Khao soy/soi I have eaten this dish in Chiang Mai a few years back and the soup was somewhat more diluted and more coconutty whereas over here, the curry tended to be thicker and sweeter . Another difference is that chicken slices are used here instead of a whole drumstick, likely for an easier or less messy consumption. We liked the crispy fried noodle topping and pickled cabbage which helped to balance out the sweet curry. The curry actually tasted quite similar ( just my personal 2-cents worth of opinion haha) to the 3-flavours curry set, so it you have stomach space for only one dish , perhaps going with the 3-flavours curry set may satiate the pallet.
Overall , my husband and I really appreciated the fantastic service provided by the couple and good thai food...
Read moreLet me start by saying, I found this place by accident because I had gone to the Korean restaurant the previous day. When I first walked in, I noticed the middle-aged white guy sitting on the other side of the front counter. It appeared to me he was on the computer.. There was no other guest in the restaurant and it was approximately 4:50 in the afternoon so I found that a little strange. All I was looking to buy was Tom Kai soup I noticed the price on the soup was 1395 and I also noticed that if I wanted to add chicken beef, it was an additional dollar. I’ve never gone to any restaurant in order Tompkins soup where they charge for chicken. I found that very odd. At first the gentleman said that I had to have chicken then after seeing the additional dollar on my bill I said well if you’re charging me a extra dollar I do not want chicken so I get the broth only and vegetables only. The only thing in the broth was mushrooms. I got the soup to go and it was put into a brown bag as soon as I get out of the car, I opened the bag and noticed that super separated. I have never had Tom Kai soupsoup that did that. While sitting in the restaurant waiting for my soup, I started to read the I noticed that all the reviews were four and five stars and I found that a little odd. I’ve been to some great Thai restaurants and occasionally you have the two or even the ones saying the service was not good or something else about the restaurant this restaurant, however, had no bad reviews. I thought to myself this is what the gentleman must be doing behind the counter the soup I will say was OK. It was not great. It was not wonderful. It was not something that will bring me back there. I would be Cautiouswhen going to...
