We have eaten at Huck Finns many times in the past but today was very different. When we arrived it seemed to have a different feel. As we walk in I notice my shoes have something sticky on them. Then my daughter ask me why her shoes are sticking to the floor. To my surprise it wasn't our shoes. This beautiful wooden floor had several black areas on them. It was like this when we visited other times but this time it was very sticky and all over the entire floor. I thought to myself okay, maybe they've been busy but I heard other customers complaining about the same issue. We go with our family to enjoy the vittles and great food but I was sorely disappointed this time and not sure if we'll go back. The food was not as good as previous visits and the portions were smaller. I have alpha gal syndrome and it limits me from eating at several places but Huck Finns wasn't one of them until today. Alpha Gal Syndrome can be a serious life threatening condition for people who have been bitten by lonestar tick and your body develops an allergic reaction to red meat such as beef and pork, similar to a peanut allergy. It can even cause anaphylactic shock in severe cases. I put some beans on my plate to eat and I had this uneasy feeling, so I ask my husband to try the meat and it was so small he wasn't sure. I have eaten these beans many times before and they had turkey bacon in them but something wasn't right. We then call over the waitress and ask her and she proceeds to tell me that it's pork. My husband looked at the website and it says they have turkey ham in their white beans. I go ask the gentleman at the counter and tells me the same thing and they have changed recently. I told him that was unfortunate and the website needs to be changed. I'm so glad I listened to my gut because it could have made for a very bad day for myself and family. Do...
Read moreFast and friendly service. Fully committed to the catfish shack theme. Fresh and we'll prepared food.
If you go in with the proper expectations, you'll be very pleasantly surprised. It's not a fancy place, and isn't supposed to be. Think Cracker Barrel with a catfish shack theme... and executed much more thoroughly.
They have their own branded shirts, dolls, toys...and Moonshine Jelly for goodness sake!
Our server, Katie, was excellent and anticipated our needs by delivering everything we could want with a smile and charm.
The hostess (sorry I don't remember her name) took the time to have a full conversation with my mother about her grandfather that used to live in Tallahassee. It made my mother's day.
The seasoning of the food isn't spectacular, but it was notably fresh.
Finally, the amount of food is the true standout here. With each meal, you get unlimited Vittles (hush puppies, pickles, onions, coleslaw AND beans). Combined with your entree, it's an insurmountable quantity of delicacies. I don't know how they can afford to do it. Everyone in our party needed a to-go box.
Thanks for a great time and a...
Read moreSome girls at a local spa recommended Huck Finn's for some good ol' country eating for dinner. Their recommendation did not disappoint. The beans, coleslaw, and hush puppies they bring to the table are bottomless. You can opt for a bottomless side option for your dinner with a side chosen from the menu, but I don't remember the price.
I ordered the grilled shrimp + fried catfish dinner. My catfish fillets were significantly smaller than Husband's, but whatever. They tasted delicious. He got the catfish + chicken dinner option, and he said the chicken was pretty greasy (not drained well) but overall, it was outstanding.
Our server was excellent and very sweet. It was her fourth day on the job, but she handled everything gracefully, even the nasty customers sitting behind us. The noise level was about what we expected, but it wasn't overwhelming. Just a typical noise level for a rather large dining area.
I've thought about those white beans, corn nuggets, hush puppies, and catfish several times since leaving, so believe me when I say we most definitely will be back for another meal...
