Went here to catch up with some friends and watch the Utah football game. The first thing that I noticed is that this place is LOUD. Not like playing music loud, just everyone talking in a room that has no sound absorption and everything echoes to a roar. It makes it difficult to converse with each other, especially with the seating arrangement over long tables, but it does attract a fun younger crowd if that is what you are going for.
The fries and the sausages are pretty decent as food options. There are a good selection of different sausages to choose from, and each one I've tried has been fantastic. I would rate the fries as above average, and the garlic aioli and fry sauce were both the perfect complement. The food is also brought out fast (within 5 minutes on a busy Friday night) so that is a big plus.
As the name suggests, this is definitely a place to come for beer, and the bar setup is unique compared to many other bars in the area. To order a drink, you stand in line (nobody comes around to take your order, and no classic long bar style). There are three bartenders to take your order at the register and pour your drink. There is a pretty large menu, but many of the offerings are in the $15-20 price range, which is above what I would want to pay to try something new just to try it.
Not exactly my style, but it's nice to have some variety in the area, and it definitely serves...
Read moreI went here on a Friday afternoon it was fairly dead, ID'd as I walked in - all good. Sat down and had two beers. Came back on Sunday and THEY WOULDN'T LET ME IN. They said my Canadian (Alberta) Driver's license wasn't valid. They said "it scans in the system fine but I can't verify that it is real, you can't come in without your passport." When I said I was there less than 48 hrs before he said "well then someone wasn't doing their job" I am a huge beer buff and this is the type of place I love to go to and hang out at when I travel. I have been to HUNDREDS of bars around the US and around the world and NEVER have I been asked for my passport. (I keep my passport locked in the hotel safe). It honestly made me very upset and angry but I just walked away, depressed and my evening ruined because I came back to this specific spot because I enjoyed it two days before.
Very upsetting. If the Law actually requires my passport then you're telling me the 30+ other bars I visited while in Utah broke the law which seems very unlikely that SO MANY would misinterpret the law. It seems more likely that THIS ONE doesn't fully understand the exceptions.
Food - just hot dogs / sausages that aren't...
Read moreI've only been here a couple times. Watched the NBA finals here one year. Ate some brats, met some friends, bleed from Johnny's into the Beer Bar then eventually next door to Bar X until I'm sleeping in a gutter. Beer Bar is a little less pretentious than Bar X although still fairly hipster. The different dips they have for their fries are all great although I suggest one of their aioli genres. The brats are pretty delicious. What sucks is that you'll eat one, and you feel you should be full, but because they're so delicious, you want to eat three me. Everything is cafeteria style, which means if you want another drink or more food you need to go up to the counter and get it yourself. The seating is also like a cafeteria in the sense the tables are the kinds that have the benches attached...sort of like a cafeteria. They have projectors and TVs everywhere showing whatever event is most popular, although they seem to be soccer leaning for sure. This is probably one of my favorite areas of Salt Lake because if you get bored of it here, you have Twilight, Johnny's, Bar X, Bourbon House, Beerhive, Murphy's, Cheers, Whiskey Street and Bodega all less than a 5...
