We went to their kitchen on a Sunday evening. It was open according to the website/Google. We placed the order, and sat there - waited for our order to be ready. Our 22 month old twins were with us and we believed that the kitchen order would be quick. The kiosk suggested that the time for order pickup would be 7-17 mins. We waited for 30 minutes - hungry, managing hangry toddlers and our order kept showing delayed. I then called the number and requested them to make it quick when they informed us that the kitchen was closed and the order should not have gone through in the first place. We were so so upset. We had hungry and cranky children, we had waited for 35 minutes by this time and had no quick alternatives for dinner.

Next time you go - make sure you call them and ask if they are open in the first place, because well, they will close the physical kitchen but might have not bothered to close the system online making it difficult and frustrating for their customers. This happened on 5.30 pm - and up until 8 pm google showed them open, door dash was taking their orders (it is not just the kiosk that wasn't working). I made it a point to check before I posted a negative review because while the money for our order had been refunded, more customers could clearly have ordered and might have to go through...

Had the vegan idly today. Delicious! Idlies fresh and moist with just the right fermentation tang! A lovely mint chutney, a fragrance sandbar that I would love to buy in a big bowl and eat only that, and two delicious red sauces, one very hot and one mild. Served on a sweet little dish with a cute tray ray wrapper with vintage newspaper motives. Well the atmosphere is very bare bones because it is downtown and it is a walk in order yourself, kind of set up, I thought the interior was very sweet. It was light filled, and one set of windows faces made in lane and there’s a little set of tables outside and maiden lane as well, so it’s it has a lovely, spare clean atmosphere without pretense. I love South Indian food and I’m thrilled that there’s something like this downtown in San Francisco. The meal settled really well in my body and I feel like everything was very fresh and healthy.

The service was really nice too. I didn’t realize you ordered yourself with a touchscreen, but one of the men behind the counter took my order verbally and had it almost finished by the time I completed the...

I had the pleasure of dining at Once Upon a Dosa SF, and it was a truly delightful experience! From the moment we walked in, the staff greeted us with warmth and genuine humility, making us feel right at home. Their friendly and attentive service added a personal touch that made the meal even more enjoyable.

The food was nothing short of exceptional. Every dish we ordered was incredibly fresh and bursting with authentic South Indian flavors. The dosas were perfectly crispy, the chutneys were vibrant and flavorful, and the sambar had just the right balance of spices. It's clear that a lot of care and attention goes into preparing each dish.

If I had to suggest one thing, it would be to keep surprising us with seasonal specials or new additions to the menu. This place is a gem for anyone craving South Indian cuisine in SF. Highly recommend for a meal that's as comforting as it...

An encounter here stayed with me ; As I ate their delicious dosa and drank the complimentary but stellar Madras coffee and enjoy the warm service , a random young Indian client here acknowledges my presence ; after some pleasant intros, he tells me he worked for Elon Musk, then left Twitter, and now works for LinkedIn. He doesn’t read books but somehow attends rare-book festivals and tell me about one book fair where he will arrive at noon! He is still in touch with Musk but refuses to work at Tesla. He assures me of his success and his wellbeing . I almost asked him, “Then why are you at this roadside hole-in-the-wall eating dosa and striking up conversations with a nobody like me?”

We hired Rukmani to cater our little boy’s birthday party last night for more over 50 people. Overall, we were quite pleased with the food, service, and, in particular, the live dosa booth! The dinner was brought in with great packaging, with high-quality ingredients, and on time! When I initially called Rukmani, it was barely two days before the event, and I'm still in awe at how she managed to coordinate everything so quickly before the event. I don't usually post reviews online, but I'm personally very happy with these people and would heartily suggest them for absolutely delicious South Indian vegetarian items! I'm grateful.

Medu Vada: Pretty great, it's soft and flavorful without being oily, which gives it a great homemade feel. OG Roast Dosa: Solid choice and pretty filling with the potato masala add-on. It's made thin, large, and somewhere between slightly crispy and slightly soft. The potato masala was really flavorful and I enjoyed it with the dosa. They also served both dishes with a potato sagu that was quite delicious. The coconut chutney and tomato chutney weren't too great, but the rest of it made up for that. Overall a pretty good spot and I would definitely return and recommend.
