Pizzeria Delfina in the Mission was the only way I was able to feel satisfied about Pizza again after returning from a month in Europe which involved 2 weeks in Italy spanning Milan, Rome and Venice back in 2008. My outlook and understanding of Pizza was changed forever. I somehow deduced that there were only two Pizza places that were going to be able to hold up to what I experienced in Italy. One of them was Pizzetta 211 and the other was Delfina. Suffice it to say, I recently tried Pizzetta 211 again the other day and they handed me something that looked like it was falling apart. (See my other reviews for more on that). So Pizzetta 211 left Pizzeria Delfina alone as the only last truly good Pizza that's not Tony's related in San Francisco. 23 years I waited to return to Pizzeria Delfina again.
The cards were stacked against Pizzeria Delfina as I ordered delivery through Caviar, not realizing they were a subsidiary of the horrid company Door Dash who has up to now sent every single pizza to me Ice Cold and did not even beg for forgiveness even in the slightest. But, I needed to know. After 23 years. The answer to this Pre-Destined question "Will Pizzeria Delfina still be one of the best if the best in the City after all this time?"
The answer is yes. It is still one of the best of all time in San Francisco - after 23 years it still is as far as my opinion goes. So far no one else holds this title and I have now tried 47 pizza places since returning to San Francisco in May 2022. Pizzeria Delfina is still one of the God's of Pizza in San Francisco. Only Tony's and Empire Pizza (who this place I heard has members of) hold this kind of stature. I don't care who you are, Delfina has come through in areas all others fail. For example, Pizzetta 211 who can't even keep a full pizza together let alone even step up to the absolute majesty and beauty of this Craftsmanship.
Respect to the Pizza makers at Delfina. Big time respect.
Please make sure you DO try Pizzeria Delfina if you care about Pizza and you want to have the kind of thing that is acceptable after you have been in Italy for awhile.
If you want to eat good food that will likely make you happy, eat at Delfina.
Objectively, they make perfect pizza. If you want an example of Pizza perfected, this is it. It just is. Yes or Yes?
Facts.
No...
Read moreAfter a busy day of walking around Fisherman's Wharf and The Presidio, I was hungry! Pizzeria Delfina was definitely able to satisfy my hunger. I read the reviews before going and many people said that there was a wait so before going I called to see if there was a wait and if so if I could make reservations. Unfortunately, I was told it's first come, first serve. We decided to go for it anyway and when the three of us arrived, we were told the wait was for about an hour. We decided to wait it out and they have a chalk board where you write your name and the number of people in your party. We ended up waiting for at most about 45 minutes because three seats opened up at the bar/counter. If we didn't take those seats, the wait for a table was about another 10 minutes. Service was good. All the staff were attentive and nice. The food came pretty quick, which is what I would expect because this place is not too big and there were a lot of chefs in the kitchen. I got the margarita pizza and it was very good. The size was good. I was pretty hungry and ate the whole thing myself. I highly recommend asking for olive oil so you can dip the slice of pizza in the olive oil because it adds more taste. Speaking of taste, I could really taste the quality and freshness of the ingredients. The one negative I had with this place was the music. They unnecessarily blast rock music through the speakers so we all kind of have to yell to each other. Overall, I can see why this place has such good reviews and I highly...
Read moreI love trying new places to eat in the city, and this place was recommended to me by a friend, and I must say, it did not disappoint! While it isn't the best pizza and italian food in the city, it definitely ranks near the top.
We ordered their special pizza of the day: a chile, guanciale, with pecorino as well as their meatball appetizer. The pizza was delicious and a good size to share between two hungry people. Their meatballs weren't as good as Tony's in North Beach, but pairing them with the huge crispy bruschetta they come with, makes the appetizer worth ordering again. Moreover, I have to give extra points for having a few really good beers available including "Death in Taxes" on tap. That beer is so awesome, and when I saw it, I immediately had to order it with my meal. And I almost always order wine with Italian food, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity.
Overall, the staff is extremely welcoming and courteous, the wait wasn't very long, and the vibe is very laid-back. If I really like a restaurant, it's because it made a strong-enough impression that I will want to return to eat there, and this place has done just that. Now, the only question is whether the other two locations can hold up the standard that this...
