Augh... my wife and I REALLY wanted to like this place. My wife has loved this building since she was a child. It was severely damaged by a fire and we were lucky enough to see it as it was being renovated. First off, the place is gorgeous. You simply can’t make a house like this ugly. I do wish they had done more to restore the original look of the building, but that’s just a personal preference. On to our experience:
We had a long wait when we visited here. Not to be seated, but to simply be waited on. Initial contact, drinks, appetizers and entrees all seemed to take a long, long time to come out. When we first got to Husk, there was a wait to be seated for our reservation. We went upstairs to the bar and it seemed to be packed - more like a club scene than an upscale restaurant. The drinks were expensive, but we sort of expected that. The bartenders were nice and attentive. Great start!
We were notified that our seat was ready and were led to our table. From there, it went downhill. It took a long time for someone to greet us and even ask us what we wanted to drink. The food was hit and miss. The caviar and oysters were great. Skip the fried pig skin things though. It’s like there covered in crushed Doritos. Very salty... not that good in our opinion. My entree was decent, but nothing that gave me that “wow” that I was hoping for... I think I had duck (it’s been a while ago). My wife had the fish entree of the night. It was bland and completely lacked any flavor. Very dissatisfying. There was evidently a problem that night because some of the people that were investors of the place had come in and were not happy either. I believe the guy that came in also owns Byrd cookie company. Not sure how the two places are connected - but it showed us that we weren’t the only ones that had an issue. I usually do t let a single poor experience shape my view on a place. With the money we paid for our meal though, I don’t think I want to pay that price to be disappointed again. Hopefully they’ll do well. If they make it for a while, get some good reviews and get the wrinkles ironed out, we may...
Read moreGoing to mimic some of the reviews I wish I read prior to eating here. First I am going to start with the positives, the staff working there were nothing short of amazing. Everyone we interacted with was extremely helpful and kind.
We sat at the bar and ordered two mocktails, both were 10/10 amazing. We got the ginger (smash?) and a blueberry drink, I would highly recommend both.
For an appetizer we decided to order a side of biscuits, and these were some of the best biscuits I have ever had in my life. I could eat a dozen of these things!
Now for the areas that are disappointing, our entree and desert. We ordered the pork loin and also the chicken breast entree. The pork loin was chewy and flavorless. The collards and other sides included were drastically colder than the meat it was served with, and also they had very little flavor. The chicken dish, the chicken and the sauce were great it tasted like your at home BBQ chicken with a fancy sauce, the sides however weee similar to the pork, cold and didn’t taste like anything. This was very disappointing.
We ended up ordering desert to try and save the night, we went with the upside down permission cake. Awful. This is all around one of the worst deserts I have ever paid for. This comes with a slice of cake, an ice cream and a sesame seed cracker(?). The cake was almost impossible to cut through with a spoon, it like the entree has almost no taste and firm/dry and tasted like maybe it was an old pie that went stale? The ice cream tasted like an unripe plum sorbet. The sesame cracker, I’m sure may be good for someone else it just was not for me and I normally thoroughly enjoy granola/seed products.
All in all the TL;DR great place to stop for drinks but I would skip the food. Our bill for 2 was $140 and it felt like such a waste. With so many amazing restaurants in the area, I would not try this...
Read moreOne very bad dish alas. I would have given 3.5 overall if that were an option. We were so excited to eat here and the atmosphere immediately lived up to the hype. The building and upper floor where we were seated is just beautiful ! For the most part the food was very good except for one dish that gravely disappointed. The oysters, duck, beef and pork were all delicious. However we had that one dish , the Wreckfish, that was excessively salty- so salty that it was inedible. When we finally got our servers attention, they took it back and said they would send out another- we asked that it please be less salty. We waited and when it finally came it was also too salty once again. We all love salt, so it is surprising to get a fish that is too salty for us. This was very disappointing, and felt like a rookie mistake for a restaurant of this price and caliber. In addition, the person we were celebrating the birthday for that night had ordered it. We finally just dropped it and he let it be as it was getting late. At least they did not bill us for it. In general the service was ok—although very engaging and nice— too slow for our tastes considering the place wasn’t packed. Our waters were not attended to without our asking for ex- which I would expect at this level of restaurant. It was nice that our menu said “ Happy Birthday” and they brought sparkling wine to the table in his honor. We ordered dessert which was good but not spectacular. I also did expect some kind of apology beyond what we got.
All in all- for the price point and missed expectations-we left deflated in spite of the dishes we did have that we enjoyed. I hope they can achieve greater consistency in the future that will deliver against...
