Although not quite as wonderful as the full fine dining option upstairs, we were pleasantly surprised with our experience at Vic's River Grill.
Food [8.5/10]: I ordered the catfish and grits with a french onion soup and the other guests in my party ordered the smash burger and the scallops respectively.
First to come out was the soup, a perfect amount of cheese and a delicious broth needed no additions. The crouton could have been better, but was still a much better french onion soup than expected.
For my catfish and grits, I was highly impressed with the taste. The batter was heavy but not crunchy, a slight upset for a southern style plate. However, it was cooked to perfection, and the fact that all the ingredients came together to taste delicious took my mind off the texture. The catfish with the creamy and cheesy grits perfectly compliments the fresh and even slightly spicy tomato broth that the dish rests in. I had no problem cleaning my plate.
For the smash burger, the guest I was with claimed that the burger was good for what it was. The burger had two wagyu patties on it with traditional burger toppings and was served with a side of fries. The guest's main comments were that the patties were cooked wonderfully. In addition, he was quite impressed with the fries. I tried one and was also impressed by the seasoning and the perfect crunchy outside soft inside texture you want with fries.
For the scallops, they were a good consistency and tasted good as well. Traditional scallops, not much else to say. However, it's worth noting it is served with a quinoa dish that compliments the flavour of the scallops.
Beverage [9/10]: Vic's River Grill has a wide selection of wines which I believe are a smaller selection of their Vic's on the River upstairs wine collection. They provide you a tablet which has their entire wine collection on it with data about each wine. The wine ordering process is therefore streamlined. Prices are as expected.
Service [7.5/10]: Our waiter was somewhat attentive and not obstructive, but it could have been much better.
Dessert: [10/10]: Two members of our party ordered the key lime pie, and the other the chocolate mousse pie. The key lime was absolutely wonderful. It couldn't have been a better end to the meal and I highly recommend you order it. At first it is mellow but after sitting in the mouth for just a moment an explosion of fresh lime flavour hits you. The pie is a true...
Read moreI want to start out by saying thank you to Missy our server for our wonderful experience. I HAVE NEVER BEEN SO IMPRESSED AND AWED BY SUCH A WELL TRAINED AND FLUID RESTAURANT. everything was like clockwork and really beautiful to watch. The workers took great care and respect with the restaurant and our experience was like none other. Me and my other half have been and worked in such places and even at the best days our personal experiences could not compare. But you're not here for that you're hear to hear about the food. The food was so delicious. Things I had never tried or heard of. We walked in and was immediately sat and greeted with refreshments and given menus and a wine tablet. We order two beers and a fly flew in mine and the waitress didn't even need to be called. She immediately saw this and grabbed my untouched beer and fetched me a freshly chilled glass and the beer to pour it in front of me. Assuring me of a newly poured drink. She thought it out in detail and that's the little things that matters. Our appetizer was the Blue Crab beignets, lemon slice on the side and came with a side or lemon aioli sauce and let me tell you I almost went into tears. It was beautiful something I've never tasted. Crunchy soft exterior fried and a warm savory and sweet interior filled with cheese lemon and crab. Far beyond what words can describe. My only wish as a party of two that instead of three beignets there should be four. Afterwards we order Salmon Oscar sliced potatoes and the best asparagus I ever tasted over hollandaise sauce. The asparagus really shined and was tender and seasoned to perfection. No rubbery aspect to them at all. You could tell the chefs knew their craft and it shined harmoniously. The other dish was a seafood platter fried catfish, shrimp, fried oysters, fries, (flakey, crisp, fried not oily at all seasoned perfectly). These dishes all blended so perfectly together. On top of our experience and our wonderful waitress who was in earshot or refilling our waters without being asked and almost immediately after drinking from them. Our experience was 10/10 and definitely deserves an award of excellence. I will look forward to coming back here and trying their 8oz sirloin with a fresh lobster tail on top. Again thank you Vic's for our beautiful evening in which you made even more stellar with your...
Read moreThe only reason this is getting 3 stars is because it's a beautiful space in a great location and the manager (I believe he was the manager) was really on the ball about trying to make things right.
Four of us came in for a late dinner on a Sunday night - the place wasn't too busy. Our party ordered:
French onion soup We split an iceberg wedge Waygu Smashburger Fried Seafood Platter Steak Frites
I had asked for blue cheese dressing with the wedge, it came with buttermilk ranch. I had to ask again, and they brought it out quickly. Asked for steak to be cooked medium - when it came to the table and I cut into it, it was practically still mooing. It was grossly undercooked. It took a bit for the server to come back over, and he took it away to be fixed.
The manager then came over and said they were just going to prepare a whole new one instead of just cooking the other a bit more. As I'm waiting for my meal, the person who got the Fisherman's platter coughs and say's "What is this?" And he proceeds to hold up a very very long hair that had been cooked into one of the fried shrimp - so the shrimp was dangling and swinging around!
So the other two in our party have finished their meals by now.
The server and manager came back with my steak (which was cooked perfectly this time) and we mentioned/showed them the shrimp - to which they took his plate away and said they'd make him a whole new plate (even though he had already eaten all of the oysters and some of the shrimp)
And they HUSTLED. They really did. The brought him a new plate of piping hot (and hopefully hair-free) seafood. Which he enjoyed. I was not a fan of the sauce on my steak - it was bitter and not like a regular brandy au-poivre, so I scraped it off as best I could and ate the steak. At this point it's after 10pm.
I might go back to Vic's River Grill - as I mentioned it's a beautiful space in a great location - and the staff did really hustle when things went south and tried to make it right. But if I'm paying almost $50 for steak and fries I want it to knock my socks off and it just...
