We arrived at the restaurant at 7:30 pm on Monday, 30 December. Sadly the buffet is absolutely not what it used to be - also suggest you read very bottom paragraph of this for health note.
FOOD/BUFFET - No pickled or creamed herring, a basket of white bread (no pumpernickel, no onion, no sourdough), only two cheeses one of which seemed like slices of flimsy Kraft American cheese, etc. The buffet also had a baked ziti type pasta dish and baked chicken neither of which we tried since we wanted more traditional food we could not get at home or in other restaurants. There was still a few traditional cold salads which were good - beets in cream sauce, carrots and peas in cream sauce, tasty potato salad, pickled cucumber, pickled beets, and cauliflower with what we believe was a light curry sauce. There was one traditional sausage, and good meatballs and gravy. Overall, the buffet was ok and did have some variery, but absolutely not what it used to be and provides, as the restaurant's name says, only a Bit O'Denmark. Note - there are other buffets nearby!
We also ordered grilled chicken club sandwiches which where well made thick chicken breast, VERY large, and tasty. Each person only ate half the sandwich.
SERVICE - Service was good and pleasant given the fact that there appeared to be only one server who was, with a fantasticly positive attitude, racing between tables. Also noted, when we called to make a reservation, the gentleman who answered the phone spoke so fast and unclearly, we were not sure who we were calling. And, to make things worse, he started laughing and talking to someone else like we were not on the phone. When we arrived the gentleman was not any better in terms of attitude or understandability.
When we first began eating at this restaurant approximately 17 years ago it was better than it is now. Perhaps new owners, perhaps, management change, perhaps the economy, not certain. Would we eat here again? Perhaps, BUT THE STRAND OF HAIR the person two tables away from us reported in their food combined with the long blonde strand of hair we pulled from our food only 15 minutes later says we probably would not. Please wear hair nets, tie your hair, wear hats, do something when...
Read moreAmazing night on Christmas Eve! My wife and I left the kids at the hotel for the evening and went out for a long overdue date night. We wandered around for a while and finally found a place that was open on Christmas eve. We sat at the bar and ordered the most delicious hot wings with the hot sauce on the side. They make their hot sauce in house and it's spectacular! We ordered some 16oz draft Danish Red beer. Our first time trying it. We ended up having two glasses each! Good stuff! But that's not the highlight of our night. We met some locals who sat next to us. Bill and Gail. We ended up talking about travel, cats, kids, traffic and horses for the next hour and a half. Our bartenders Julie and Victor were amazing and just added to the most interesting conversation we've had in ages. When it was time to pay our bill, it came to our surprise that Bill and Gail had paid for our whole night before they left! What an amazing act of generosity and kindness! Solvang is one of a kind! We ended up finishing up the night just laughing and talking with Victor and Julie. On a night like Christmas eve, it's rare to find people who are happily working their shift. Simply the best service and hospitality you could ever ask for. If you go to Bit O Denmark, do yourself a favor and sit at the bar and ask for either Julie or Victor (and tip them well, they deserve it) and cross your fingers that you'll meet some locals that are as amazing as Bill and Gail are. True authentic Solvang experience! Adding this one to the memory bank. Thank you...
Read moreI don’t know where to begin. Let’s start with the only good part. They were the only restaurant in all of solvang that didn’t have a 1 hour wait time. It looked nice enough.
We sat down and the waiter took our order after 15-20 minutes. a couple who was seated before us had their order taken before us, rightfully so. We got a bowl of stale bread and butter packets. After we ordered, we sat for an entire hour before someone came up and said “Hey guys, don’t worry, we’ll bring the check out in a second!” but we hadnt even gotten our food. after another 15 minutes, they told us the food was on the way. We asked them to just put it in a box and bring us our check. We spent over $100 to sit in an empty restaurant in complete silence. The couple behind us didn’t even get their bread until 30 minutes after we did.
We decided to walk around and eat as we had just wasted over 1 hour of our time we had in solvang waiting for it. the food was cold and nasty. I ordered a grilled cheese as it was the only good vegetarian option, and it was a kraft cheese slice on white bread with like 8 fries. my friend ordered a salad and it was just literal lettuce and tomato. The artichoke dip looked like throw up and tasted horrific. terrible restaurant. a refund wouldn’t even cut it. i feel like a need a shower and an exorcism after that.
in addition to all this, the food made us all sick. so unless you want terrible service and diarrhea, i would go literally anywhere. even the subway is a...
