Havelské town is a former town in the vicinity of the Prague Church of St. Havel and the adjacent monastery of the Magdalenites, later harvested Carmelites. It was probably built between 1232-1234. The oldest written mention dates back to 1265. It was "a town in town", inside the fortifications of the Old Town of Prague, but it had it´s own legal and administrative rights. It was legally merged with the Old Town in 1287. The only preserved market place in the middle of Old Prague dates back to 1232. In addition to Havelská Street, where market stalls are currently, the original marketplace included the parallel Rytířská Street and Uhelný trh (the Coal Market). Today you will find a wide selection of fresh fruit and vegetables.
Havelské město, v písemnostech nazývané Město u kostela sv. Havla, je někdejší město, respektive čtvrť v okolí pražského kostela sv. Havla a přilehlého kláštera magdalenitek, později obutých karmelitánů. Vzniklo pravděpodobně mezi lety 1232–1234. Nejstarší dochovaná písemná zmínka se vztahuje k roku 1265. Bylo městem ve městě, uvnitř opevnění Starého města pražského, avšak mělo vlastní právní a správní řád. Se Starým Městem bylo právně sloučeno roku 1287. Jediné dochované tržiště uprostřed staré Prahy pochází již z roku 1232. Kromě Havelské ulice, kde stojí v současnosti stánky trhovců, zahrnovalo původní tržiště i paralelní Rytířskou ulici a Uhelný trh. Dnes zde naleznete široký výběr čerstvého ovoce a zeleniny, o víkendech pak zejména...
Read moreMY ADVICE: DO NOT BUY FRUIT HERE! They wanted to charge over £10/€12/CZK330 per small box .. that is five times the normal fruit price in supermarkets. So - how do they sell anything? Well, first of all all the ‘market sellers’ sell the same fruit for the same prices. There is no point shopping around. Secondly - and this is the clever bit - they have priced each beautifully made box at the price PER 100g - so you might think it’s €2 (which would be a fair market price here, no overheads to pay, all fruit in season - June, etc) .. when actually (the box weighs 400g) so it’s €8/£7 .. and this is 2-3 times the price of the same fruits IN LONDON. So yes - they present the fruit nicely, but they price it PER 100g.. that’s two apricots or six or seven strawberries! I think it’s a con because the 100g price is how much you ought to pay locally for THE WHOLE BOX - but only when they ask for your cash (because the box is say 400g) they ask for four times as much and I bet lots of tourists just hand over CZKs because they don’t do the conversion. I nearly paid £24 for two boxes of fruit. The seller didn’t even blink. He wasn’t friendly. It was the end of the day when you’d expect normal markets to discount fruit that might not sell. Nope. And all the stores sell the same fruit at the same prices. Fixed market? Con? To me it is very clear it is. Enjoy the views - but don’t...
Read moreThis is the first time for me to go to this place. I would like to recommend you who want to find unique Prague souvenirs to bring to your home country.
You can find paintings, t shirts, hats, handcrafts and other things here. There are some shops that sell fruits as well.
I bought one oil painting for my wife from the painter himself. He is nice. He wrapped the painting tidyly.
If you are tourist, you might be eligible to get tax refund. Please make sure to bring your passport. If you purchase more than 2000CZK then you can get tax refund. After you get the tax refund form then you can go to the tax refund office near there. You just have to walk around 5 minutes.
You can get the refund inmediately. However you have to make sure that your form needs to be stamped at the border before you fly out of European country. Failure to do this then your credit card will be charged the tax that has been refunded to you. As I still stay in European country, I have not yet done this step. I will update later.
My conclusion is this place is nice to go and buy things. The staff is nice and friendly. The price is not...
