Discovering The Chain Bridge. When we finished visiting the Buda Castle grounds, we made it a point to cross the Chain Bridge. It's a suspension bridge that links Buda and Pest. According to Wikipedia, the Chain Bridge is the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary and it was opened in 1849. Unfortunately, the original bridge was blown up on January 1945 during World War II. It needed to be rebuilt and later reopened in 1949. As we crossed the bridge by foot, the details left us in awe. The linking loops acting as chains all the way across the river. The giant Guardian lions and the amazing views from Danube River. Also, the amazing views from the Royal Castle and the best of both sides of the capital of Hungary – Buda and Pest. The Brigde has an amazing structure, so we took the time to soak in all details around the gorgeous architecture. Also, if you notice the position of the tunnel (Budai Váralagút) and how it's directly behind the chain bridge. It's said that when it rains, they can retract the bridge back into the tunnel for shelter. Sadly, it was overcast / raining when we visited. But it looks like the bridge is amazing during sunset. So, if you have the opportunity during a beautiful day, why not cross it during the sunset. Serge: 5 Eli: 5 Recommend: Totally, amazing constructions and gorgeous views from Buda and Pest. Tips: 1. Get comfortable shoes to cross the bridge; 2. Another creative and up-close way to view the bridge is by boat tour. You're welcome !

The Chain Bridge (Széchenyi Lánchíd), built in 1849, was the first connection between the then independent cities of Buda and Pest (the cities were merged in 1872). Hotels overlooking the Danube Although it has the word "chain" directly in its name, it is in fact a classic suspension bridge, but architecturally it is one of the most beautiful in Europe, with a span of 202 metres, at the time of its commissioning it was even one of the largest in the world. Parts of the massive steel chains weighing over 5 000 tonnes are attached to the massive stone gates, which form the bridge's most striking feature. Széchenyi Bridge is also the first of 8 modern bridges that connected the two cities of Buda and Pest, making it Budapest's most famous bridge. On the Buda side, the Buda Tunnel under Castle Hill with its magnificent entrance portal connects to the bridge. Its construction began not long after the bridge was completed and was finished in 1857.

Speaking about connecting things and people I would like to introduce you a pedestrian friendly bridge built to connect people, making possible the integration of two ancient riverside cities Buda and Pest into a new capital city of Hungary, assisting also the connection of East and West, and a better understanding all over Europe. The landmark suspension bridge made of primarily of cast-iron and stonewas designed and engineered by English men. It was opened in 1849, after the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. It was only the second permanent crossing on the whole length of the great river Danube. At the time of its construction, it was regarded as one of the modern world's engineering wonders. It has represented an enormous significance in the country's economic, social and cultural life, as much as the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. It became a symbol of advancement, national awakening, and the linkage between East and West. In World War II, the bridge was blown up in January 1945 by the retreating Germans with only the towers remaining. It was rebuilt using original parts recovered from the river and reopened in 1949. I was born and I have always been living here in Hungarian capital. We use this amazing bridge on everyday basic but we try not to forget history and and those who designed, financed and built this structure in 19th century. Remember the Chain Bridge is most enchanting at night when the lights are on. #budapest

CHAIN BRIDGE The Szechenyi Chain Bridge, adorned with ornate cast iron decorations, spans the Danube River, linking the Buda and Pest sides of Budapest. It holds the distinction of being Hungary's first permanent Danube bridge, inaugurated in 1849. From the Pest side, it originates near Szechenyi Square and the Gresham Palace, while on the Buda side, it commences from Adam Clark Square, adjacent to the Zero Kilometre Stone and the lower station of the Castle Hill Funicular ascending to Buda Castle. Named after its supporter Istvan Szechenyi, it's commonly known as the Chain Bridge. Funding was significantly contributed by Greek merchant Georgios Sinas, whose name is inscribed on the bridge's southwestern foundation on the Buda side. In the turmoil of World War II, retreating German forces destroyed the bridge on January 18, 1945, leaving only its towers standing. However, it was meticulously reconstructed and reopened in 1949. As of March 2021, the bridge has been temporarily closed for vehicular traffic due to renovation. During our visit to Budapest, though vehicle movement was permitted, pedestrian access remained restricted. Local police informed us that, coincidentally, the bridge was set to fully reopen just a few days after our departure.
