Read moreThis bridge is closed to bicycles and taxis during the day Today, I'm going to talk about the worst experience I had during my trip to Europe. On my way back the next day after seeing the beautiful night view of Budapest, the navigation system in my car told me to cross this bridge, so I did. There was a police officer waiting at the end of the bridge, and we had to pay a fine. Yes, that's right, in Rome, follow Roman law, and ignorance is a crime. I paid the 120 euros to the police officer and was about to get in my car when I saw a regular vehicle trying to cross the bridge from the opposite direction telling the police officer to turn back and not come this way.
I'm a relatively good-natured Korean who likes to live a quiet life, but the police officer's behavior was the first time in my life that I had to speak out against public authority. I told the police officer to pay the same fine as that person. However, he strongly ignored me. I had already paid the fine, and I told him again to listen to my story, but the result was the same.
At least I thought the police would listen to the story of a tourist who had already paid the fine. Or there might have been a police officer stationed in the opposite direction who could give the same guidance.
Because of this, I left for another country in a bad mood after seeing the beautiful night view. The bridge seemed to me like nothing more than a trap for collecting fines. Or maybe the police had to work hard to collect fines to cover the cost of lighting up the castle and the Capitol...
Read moreDiscovering The Chain Bridge. When we finished visiting the Buda Castle grounds, we made it a point to cross the Chain Bridge. It's a suspension bridge that links Buda and Pest. According to Wikipedia, the Chain Bridge is the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary and it was opened in 1849. Unfortunately, the original bridge was blown up on January 1945 during World War II. It needed to be rebuilt and later reopened in 1949.
As we crossed the bridge by foot, the details left us in awe. The linking loops acting as chains all the way across the river. The giant Guardian lions and the amazing views from Danube River. Also, the amazing views from the Royal Castle and the best of both sides of the capital of Hungary – Buda and Pest.
The Brigde has an amazing structure, so we took the time to soak in all details around the gorgeous architecture. Also, if you notice the position of the tunnel (Budai Váralagút) and how it's directly behind the chain bridge. It's said that when it rains, they can retract the bridge back into the tunnel for shelter.
Sadly, it was overcast / raining when we visited. But it looks like the bridge is amazing during sunset. So, if you have the opportunity during a beautiful day, why not cross it during the sunset.
