Galata Tower Review - A Must-Visit Landmark with a Few Drawbacks

Visiting Galata Tower was an absolutely wonderful experience! The panoramic views from the top are breathtaking, offering a 360-degree glimpse of Istanbul’s unique blend of history and modernity. Inside, the exhibitions were well-curated, featuring everything from ancient amphorae to Ottoman naval models, and even modern Turkish aerospace history. The newly renovated interior dome and observation deck were elegant and peaceful, despite the number of visitors.

However, I must point out a few frustrations that may affect your visit:

Misleading “Skip-the-Line” Ticket - I purchased my ticket through Headout, which was advertised as a “skip-the-line” option. Unfortunately, this was not true. I still had to queue with everyone else - no separate line or fast entry - even though others who bought directly from the official site paid less. It felt unfair and misleading.

No Shelter While Queuing - Another downside was the lack of shelter outside while waiting to enter. If you’re visiting on a rainy or very hot day, be prepared—there’s absolutely no cover while you stand in line.

Summary: Highlights: Historic tower, great exhibits, stunning city view Ticket tip: Buy from the official Galata Kulesi site instead of third-party vendors Be prepared: Arrive early, wear comfy shoes, and check the weather

Would I still recommend it? Absolutely yes—but go in knowing...

The Galata Tower is one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks, but honestly, it feels a bit overrated. The ticket line alone can take anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour, and once you finally get to the top, the experience isn’t as enjoyable as expected.

The view over Istanbul is undeniably beautiful—you can see the Bosphorus, mosques, and the city skyline—but the space at the top is extremely crowded. The walkway around the observation deck is very narrow, so you can barely move without bumping into someone. It makes it difficult to actually stop and take in the scenery, let alone capture good photos without feeling rushed.

While it’s a historic tower with cultural significance, the overall visitor experience is diminished by the long wait times and overcrowding. If you’re short on time in Istanbul, there are other spots—like Çamlıca Hill or Pierre Loti—that offer equally stunning views...

SCAMMED AT THE TICKET BOOTH. I went to the ticket booth and asked for 2 tickets which were 30 euro each. Expensive but happy to pay because it’s a beautiful attraction. The lady at the ticket booth hands me 2 tickets and 2 sets of headphones. I paid and then realized the headphones were and extra 12 euro each. I never asked for the headphones nor did she ask me if I wanted them. She just charged me and handed them to me without explaining it’s an extra charge. Once I realized I went back to the booth and asked her and she said oh I will cancel if you are so upset. NOT A GOOD LOOK FOR TURKEY when popular attractions take advantage of trusting tourists. My bad for being so naive but just want to warn others to make sure you are be charged only for what you ORDERED. Unfortunately ruined my otherwise...

This pandemic caught me in a very interesting time and place in life. Just when I have realised that I want to be with the person that I had been in love with, we were separated by closed borders, cancelled flights and inability to visit each other’s home countries. After a few months in separation we have made a very hard and, at the same time, easy decision of leaving our homes and living together abroad, going from one country to another, wherever both of us are admitted.
