I feel like this review should be spilt into two. One for Grand Teton and one for Yellowstone. First the negative, Yellowstone seemed overrated to me. I understand that you aren't going to see the kind of volcanic activity anywhere else in the world. It is really amazing but when I weigh seeing those sites with the amount of other people also trying to visit, it's a non starter for me. I would never come back unless it was at a much less busy time. Just not worth the hassle imo. The other parts of the park are lovely and the animals are wonderful, but again, too many other people. The stress of trying to navigate it, took away much of the pleasure.
Grand Teton was busy, yes. But much more manageable. We switched days between the two parks. After two and half days in Yellowstone, we spent three days in Grand Teton. I thought the scenery was more majestic, but maybe I'm partial to mountains. The lakes were lovely and much more accessible. It felt like a much more relaxing pace that created good memories minus the headache of traffic jams. There is traffic going back into Jackson at the end of the day but not the hours long waits that Yellowstone could have. Both deserve a visit, just not something I'd ever do again at peak season. We didn't have a choice bc of our schedules and I'm guessing, some of you will have the same tension. Do your research beforehand, know what you want to see and the best times to do it. These are not places to fly by the seat of...
Read moreThis was the most amazing, romantic (with 10 other people) educational sleigh ride!!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS TO EVERYONE!!!! Our sleigh guide was THE BEST, she was very personable ended telling us how her friend talked her into moving to Wyoming meet cowboys and she ended up marrying the owner of the Sleigh Company’s son and eventually learned everything about the Elk Refuge and how she got the job and she had the biggest smile and just laughed and we all laughed with her! I am so sorry I can’t remember her name, but that story will make sure she gets credit for this review! She would give us information as she drove along and stop and let us take pictures. She was extremely knowledgeable about the size of the elk, the other animals in the area, we saw several coyotes, she spoke as if she had studied elk, exclusively, obsessively with a phd degree!!! She was knowledgeable! She also had personality and stories about the horses and how they are named and paired up. I’m not going to say, it’s best to hear...
Read moreReally well designed visitor center, built as part of an elk refuge, with beautiful taxidermy displays. Staff here are wonderfully helpful, and gave great advice on how to spend my limited time in the Jackson/Tetons/Yellowstone area. The gift shop here is also quite sizable, and it was the only gift shop I was able to find my National Parks travel stamp in.
Jackson Hole is a great location to visit during the winter for snow sport enthusiasts, and it is around this time of year that the Elk return to the refuge. The visitor center offers a great viewing platform to see over 1000 of them when they return to weather the cold.
They also have a close relationship with the Teton Raptor Center, I visited on a Saturday, where between 3pm and 5pm three beautiful owls where visiting, along with their friendly handlers, to teach people about these birds. I believe this is regular, but phone ahead if its something you want to see,...
