I'm giving this park 1 star not because I dislike it, I don't, it is a good park for families and the playing field and lights are very much needed. No, my only problem with the park is its total lack of historical context (including the Dewitt Clinton association with the Erie Canal plaque, which, near as I can tell has no relevance to this spot). No, my issue is with the lack of reference to the Stryker Mansion or Mott farm house, the former of which would have stood approximately where the bathrooms are now I think. I did a good bit of research on the area for fun and have included screen captures of what the Stryker Mansion looked like based on illustrations before it was torn down. While the Lenape or other First Peoples had lived here for probably thousands of years before them, the Strykers, a Dutch family held the land for a couple of centuries before it was first turned into a big garden as part of a program to teach kids to grow food in the early 1900s and finally a park. The most famous of the Stryker family was Major-General Garret Hopper Stryker, who had been a Captain in the Fifth New York Regiment in the War of 1812, with the camp of his command having been within the northern limits of...
Read moreIt’s a lovely and quaint park which is well cared for—the park clean up crew was working when I visited at around 9:30am on a weekday morning.
It seems they run children’s programs possibly or just many people take their kids there—there was a good bit of noise coming from the basketball court and playground area. This didn’t bother me at all, but if you’re looking for quiet solitude it’s probably good to note that this is a lovely park but you’ll likely encounter many many other people as it’s not a large park as well as possibly noise from the kids’ play area.
A good bit of trees for shade and nice breeze as it’s quite near the river. If you’re in far west midtown/Hell’s Kitchen area and need a park to take in a breath of fresh air and perhaps chat with a nice person happening to be sitting on the bench by you, I’d recommend and I’d...
Read moreGreat outdoor park. Baseball field is lit up like daylight during evening hours. Synthetic turf. 5 basketball hoops good quality but some of the nets need to be replaced. Great playground for children. Nice seating area near the dog park with tables and chairs. Very pretty. There are even public bathrooms which is nice if you are playing ball or just around the City and need to wash your hands/use a bathroom. The dog park is ok too. A separate part for small dogs and a decent size for larger dogs. It's fully fenced with double entry gates so you can unleash before you enter the main dog run. The down side is this dog park is all pavement and no dirt or soft surface for dogs to run on. Nice community, mix of dogs and people. Overall, this park is a terrific community/neighborhood asset!
