The three-storey watchtower was part of the massive Krumlov fortifications, the construction of which began in 1497. The bastion itself was built five years later. Together with the nearby Budějovická gate and the remains of the city walls in Hradební Street, it forms the last remnants of a medieval city fortification. The tower served its original purpose until the end of the 18th century. In 1805, Prince Joseph II. of Schwarzenberg adapted the bastion to the apartment of a security guard who was supposed to watch the nearby covered wooden footbridge across the Vltava built seven years earlier. At the beginning of the 19th century, the building was changed for residential purposes. It was sold to private ownership in 1990 and today houses the luxurious Pension in the Tower.
Trojpodlažní strážní věž byla součástí mohutného krumlovského opevnění, jehož stavba započala v roce 1497. Samotná bašta vznikla o pět let později. Spolu s nedalekou Budějovickou branou a zbytky opevnění v Hradební ulici tvoří poslední pozůstatky středověké městské fortifikace. Věž sloužila svému původnímu účelu až do konce 18. století.
Read moreSuperb location. Parking near by. Unique accomodation. Great if you love history and/or architecture. It's certainly a very special place and kudos to the owners for actually turning it into an accommodation.
Not worth the money though, rather get a ticket to a castle somewhere around here and sleep in a traditional hotel.
There is no reception on site, you get a code to a safe which has a key inside. So if you do need anything you do have to call. There is no number on the website/email confirmation, but it is on the main entrance plaque on the door.
Mattress was too thin and worn out, the actual bed wasn't proper either some of the slats were broken. It was the most uncomfortable sleep of my life. If you want to actually sleep don't come here. Tbh considering they charge so much you'd expect them to invest in proper beds.
They used actual vintage/antique furniture (apart from the bed) in the room which was nice/interesting, and the bathroom has nice decor and used a lot of the original stone, but that came with a lot of moisture in there, so if you have any kind of respiratory issues probably not great.
However, staff was very accommodating when I called and told them it was too cold, they were there within 2 minutes with a heating controller, which was nice.
It's a special/unique accomodation to stay in, but I wouldn't do it again unless the bed was fixed and I would rather do it in the summer...
Read morePros: excellent location, quiet and yet close to the city center. Very attentive staff who responded quickly to questions and were very helpful. Large, clean room with a spacious bed and good heating.
Cons for us that might not be cons for other people: very firm mattress and thin pillows and blankets (with no extras available to us). Breakfast service was convenient and plentiful, but the food included was not to our taste. That is honestly something I should have considered- I would not purchase the breakfast add-on again, but others might feel it is worth the convenience.
Cons that I feel were objective negatives: the mattresses were quite thin, and both were worn down in the middle. The bed frame was very squeaky, so any slight movement from my husband woke me up. Movement upstairs (we were in the Knights Room downstairs) was audible through the ceiling. Amenities were limited to one bottle of combined shampoo/body wash per person. It definitely felt like we paid more for the experience of staying in a tower, rather than the luxury of a good night’s sleep or a well-apportioned hotel room.
We were well cared for and the room was spacious and warm, but we left feeling we overpaid for a poor night of sleep. I believe, as has been mentioned by other reviewers, that this place has a lot of...
