This 4 star hotel is a hidden gem and was so much more than what we'd expected. Tucked in off the road we arrived in a smallish driveway and boutique open air foyer and we thought the hotel was small. However, behind the foyer are beautiful rooms spread around a garden courtyard over 4 storeys, leading to an open air restaurant overlooking the infinity pool and bar. The restaurant and pool also overlook an adjoining resort and with all the trees and lush greenery, the whole place is so serene and relaxing. We really did feel like these 4 days of our holiday were 'Eat Pray Love' and I loved the free daily yoga outside under the trees or up on the roof top with a beautiful view (they bring in local yoga teachers who have different styles, which was fun). |Our room on the second top floor was an even bigger surprise. It was so spacious with a massive bathroom, lounge area and huge balcony overlooking the rooftops and trees (and this was the deluxe twin - not the highest level). There were so many little thoughtful touches - petals on the bed, somewhere to put your jewellery, sustainable toiletries replenished daily, a lovely basket to carry towels etc. to the pool or go shopping, woven slippers, a complimentary tray of snack like a jar of local biscuits fill each day, local chocolate bars, 2 tubes of chips), free local activities each day, multi-adaptor, loofah, natural insect repellent and room spray, robes, arm chair and couch, desk, movie channels and Netflix. The huge bathroom had a separate toilet, closet, drawers for shoes, shower, double sink and a massive stand alone bath next to the glass wall.|Very good selection for breakfast - fresh fruits, cereals, egg station, local sweets, |The Monkey Forest Elizabeth Gilbert writes about is at the end of the road, and Cafe Wayan, which is also mentioned in the book is just a few doors up the road (lovely atmosphere for meals and has the best cooking school out the back). Along the Jalan Monkey Forest are many great cafes (3 Monkeys, Natch Ubud, Liap Liap) Jungle Gold chocolate shop just off the main road), bars and shops (Filthy Gorgeous silver jewellery shop lovely, so is Eddy Silver). The market is within a short distance, as is the Water Palace, not to be missed. The location was very central.|Many thanks to Jehun, Agus, Septi, Palguna, Tari and Yuli who remembered our names from the very first day and were always friendly and interested in how we were. They always greeted us as if we were coming home - we felt so cared for, and all of the staff seemed very dedicated and connected to the hotel as if it was their own. We loved their attention to detail, pride in maintaining and cleaning, and their commitment to sustainability and locals e.g. bringing in local dancers from the dance school to give them work, same with yoga teachers. We enjoyed the dinner and dance show they arranged on one of the nights - felt very localised instead of commercial.|Valeria Spa just up the road was clean, professional and quite popular, as well as cheap for massages and other treatments. We also went to Luvena Spa across the road.|We booked our airport driver (also a tour guide) Arya for a day and tailored sightseeing to our interests (good English) - rice terraces, coffee plantation, temples, Tengenungan Waterfall, suckling pig restaurant for lunch, countryside. I stayed at this hotel with my fiancé for two nights, from April 25 to 27, 2025. On our last day, around 6:40–6:50 AM, we experienced a terrifying incident: someone attempted to break into our room, violently slamming the door and yelling threats to kill us if we didn’t open it.
We tried to communicate with the person, explaining that he had the wrong room, but all we heard was, “I AM ANGRY. I WILL KILL YOU. OPEN THE DOOR.” Thankfully, we had manually locked the door (note: the door does not auto-lock — you must lock it yourself at all times if you stay here).
The man didn’t leave, so we called the reception and explained what was happening. They said they would send someone, but it took an unreasonably long time — even though our room was on the same floor, literally just a one-minute walk from the lobby.
After some time, the banging and shouting stopped. However, we were left in fear and on high alert for hours, constantly checking the balcony (which only had a glass door). Most concerning was that we received no follow-up or reassurance from the hotel — we had to go back to reception ourselves to ask what was happening.
Later that morning, we asked the reception again about the incident. They said they had sent someone to our room and found nothing. We requested to see the security camera footage, and they agreed.
Later, they told us they had reviewed the CCTV footage and found no one near our room between 6:30 and 8:00 AM, implying that we were lying. However, when I insisted on checking the video myself, it clearly showed a random man walking to our room at 6:41 AM and leaving freely at 6:57 AM — right in front of the hotel manager and an IT staff member. Again, there was no credibility from the hotel staff.
After I pointed out the man in the video (which I had to show and prove myself), they started apologizing and offered a complimentary 30-minute foot massage. I asked them to locate the man, but they said they couldn’t because the cameras don’t cover critical shared areas like corridors and stairs — which was shocking. So we had to leave without knowing who the person was or how the situation was handled.
Imagine someone slamming on your door and threatening your life for 17 minutes — and the hotel failing to protect or assist you during that time.
I liked the hotel overall, but security is one of the most important factors, especially when traveling abroad as a foreigner. I am extremely disappointed in the hotel’s lack of security measures, their delayed and insufficient response to our emergency, and their failure to properly handle the situation afterwards.
Stay here if you want — just be...
