Our recent stay here was our first and mostly positive. We chose this place because of proximity to walking around town (like I’m sure many do) plus the option of staying in a historic and homey place unlike a hotel. I’d read that the parking was in a public (pay) lot and we found it easier to park and walk instead of the drop off then park, but that’s a personal preference and the option to drop off is wonderful. The lot is about a block behind the inn and a short walk. |We were greeted by three people on our way in and immediately felt welcomed. We were given a tour of the bottom floor with explanations of how things worked, what we had access to, asked if we had any food allergies and when breakfast is served.|We were taken upstairs to our room and shown things there. The Swope manor was, for us, within walking distance of everything we wanted to see in town and then some. The weather was perfect which certainly helped. When we returned for the evening there were people both inside and outside having conversations. It was a beautiful evening so my husband and I got a glass of wine courtesy of the hosts and sat outside on the patio which has room for many to sit. In addition to wine and beer there were homemade dark chocolate chip cookies available as well as coffee and tea.|I still don’t know how many staircases there are and it’s easy enough to get lost if you’re new there but it’s decorated in period style with each room having its own unique flavor.|The only negative for us was the room we were in, the Gettysburg suite, is in the front of the house which due to being in a city environment was busy. And loud. The entire night. Then there was the fire station that’s very close and the alarm went off a few times also. Needless to say we didn’t have the restful night that others staying there did due to their rooms being in the back of the house. |The breakfast the next morning was so fun, having someone serve us in almost a formal way. We were able to meet others and ask them about where they were from, etc. Fresh fruit, a muffin of sorts and quiche was the breakfast of the day. Plus a choice of juice and coffee or tea. I chatted with the morning staff who served us breakfast and they were so friendly and helpful and didn’t seem rushed for me to leave them alone 😅|The loud noises at night was definitely the worst part about the visit, especially since we live in a very rural area which probably affected us more so just be aware of the noise if you choose the Gettysburg suite otherwise I’m sure you’ll have a great time. The shower in that room was...
Read moreApril 22 2018. Upon arrival we go in guest entrance which is back door. The young lady helping us was nice, but our check-in took place in the laundry room. That was a first! We enjoyed the short tour with history notes. The amenities are nice. A complimentary glass of wine and 24/7 Coffee, hot chocolate and tea. We loved the look of our corner room: The Gettysburg Suite. But later realized the room is overly warm - so much so we can not sleep. (Isn’t that the point of having a bedroom.) It is cool outside, but windows can not be opened. The stifling heat is too much. We called for help - and a very nice person brought us a fan - which moved the warm air around. There is a/c - but I guess they were not going to waste the $$ when it is 50 degrees outside (wish we could have opened a window to get some of that lovely cool air). Sooo...our one day and night in Gettysburg is spoiled by not be able to sleep. We need to get up at 6:30 AM for breakfast and a historical tour before we leave for home - Seattle. Here it is midnight - and I am sweating too much to sleep. This suite is on a busy road so “white noise” is necessary to drown out loud trucks and motorcycles - but can still hear traffic. Bright street light and traffic light is just outside the window. Hmmmm...nope. We won’t be back and we can not recommend Swope Manor in April. Maybe when it is really hot - and they run the AC - it might be better. Not enjoying my stay - not because I am “Sleepless in Seattle” BUT because I am Sleepless in Gettysburg”. I chose Swope Manor so carefully; reading all the reviews. Well, the prior reviews were not useful in saving me from being miserable. I think they are more interested in saving on the utility bill than making a guest comfortable. I can...
Read moreWe have stayed at many bed and breakfasts. Not sure why reviewers are calling this a hotel. So if you’re looking for hotel type amenities you probably won’t find them here. Pro’s- Location. It is far enough from the busy center of town but close enough to walk. The property itself is very well kept. We stayed in The Lincoln Suite. Which is third floor rear. As typical/ breakfast is served. Complementary wine, beer, water and coffee is available. Con’s- while the location is very good. It does sit on a very busy street. I would definitely recommend getting a room on the backside of the house as it does get noisy. Being on the third floor rear, there was certainly less noise, but you cannot control the temperature of your room and we found it to be very hot. Also, as with all bed-and-breakfast no elevator so the third floor can be steep for people that are challenged. Finally a word about Gettysburg. As a Desert Storm Veteran I can tell you this place is over run by “play soldiers” and “patriots”. The guys with the gear and bumper stickers that never served. If you are a veteran you know whom I am talking about. Seeing my unit patch and a first sergeant rank sewn onto a Hawaiian shirt sleeve (not joking) was a disgrace. This b and b is very good but not 5 star. Unfortunately I don’t do well with self proclaimed...
