I’m 3 days out from a total hip replacement and have been effectively forced to sign myself out from Hobart Private, 5 days.early, due to my recovery being significantly hindered, my health itself being compromised. Here is an amended synopsis of what I wrote in my complaint to Hobart Private. Obviously not responded to as yet.
Dear Hobart Private admin, I’m currently an inpatient at Hobart private, on my 2nd hip replacement surgery - day 2. (1st surgery done 8 weeks ago).
This recovery is NOT going well, not at all - why? It’s not the shortage of fantastic nurses, the lovely food, the care or the medication, or even the surgery itself - it’s the fact that I am sharing a very very poorly designed room, with an elderly gentlemen who needs his rest (as do I) and the single - come double - room, is a key fact as to why I’m struggling…significantly struggling. My understanding at pre op check in, was that a private room would be an allocated due to the nature of the surgery… not 3-4ft away from an elderly patient. I later learned the patient before me, struggled with the same things, so it’s not as if this is an unknown problem. Given my previous THR surgery, I knew coming in that I was not going to sleep consistently for several nights and most total joint recipients understand that - you grab sleep when ever you can…but when the nurses are forced to wake you AND the other patient every-time they are attending to one of us because of the room? This THR surgery can be very painful and because of the room set up, I’ve now been too worried to call nurses to help me, because they have no option, other than to to wake the other patient (I’ve desperately needed ice last 10 hours, but it’s a noisy process replacing the machine, so I have had to go without ). I lay there waiting for the loud snoring to stop, desperately hoping I get a window where the other patient wakes for a toilet run - putting off nurses bringing my meds even though my pain score keeps climbing 7,8,9…crying in the dark. Literally. I can’t have the TV on for fear of waking the other patient, I cannot read a book, as the light bleeds onto the other patient, waking him, I can’t do anything like I could in my previous THR.…because shared room set up. The curtains that are meant to seperate us, are engineered in such a way - that privacy is next to impossible. I can hear the other patient, telling his wife about me…and how I’m keeping him up. It’s hardly fair being 100% bed ridden and having to pee in a brown cup, whilst other patients visitors are watching you and talking about you.
In relation to the curtains on the near side they are 100% a trip hazard for anyone, let alone a hip replacement patient - they present such an issue, the hospital physio could not get the mandatory exercise walker to the necessary RH side of the bed. This left no option other then to get out of the bed from the “wrong” side due to room size.
At times, I have needed help, simply getting detangled from these curtains, as more than once they tangled around me or crutches, etc…Please - someone come into this room ASAP and show me how to navigate this insanity, without getting caught up?!? You won’t because you already know of the problem. i know rooms are short, but had I have known I was not going to be able to secure a private room - I’d have put this surgery off….the stay / recovery thus far, in this shared room, has not been fair on either patient… my health / recovery is too important - I now have to leave, knowing I won’t be getting proper care, injections for blood clotting, antibiotics, correct medication for pain, etc and I’ve been forced to buy various equipment / medication / change family plans who were not expecting this to occur, etc.. I’ll be contacting Bupa and dropping private health, there is no point. This will be, and has to...
Read moreThis hospital has let my family down. Absolutely disgusting treatment from the A&E doctor this afternoon. My dad is elderly. He recently had pneumonia and it has returned with an absolute vengeance. His oxygen levels are low, his obs are all over the place. My dad lives with my sister an hours drive from the city. Dad tried to do the right thing and went to the respiratory clinic first. They did his obs and immediately told him he needed to go to hospital and that the pneumonia had returned much worse than before. They even called the hospital ahead to let them know he was coming due to the severity of the situation. He went to the private, they took him in, did his obs, then this doctor said there was no way dad would be staying and they were sending him home. He was rude and abrasive to my sister. Brushed off any of her questions, told her dad would not be staying or receiving treatment, and sent dad home with 7 days worth of antibiotics (oral antibiotics which the clinic had advised would not do the job and that he needed IV antibiotics). My sister said they lived over an hour away. He didn't care. She said what about his oxygen levels (at that stage were dropping to around 94/95. Didn't care said he should be fine and just to take antibiotics. So now my dad who is extremely unwell, cannot form a sentence without having to take a breath, has obs all over the place and literally confirmed pneumonia, is at home with my sister, so far away from help if they need it. We are all holding our breath dad survives this. We have already lost our mum and it's not good enough that we could now lose our dad due to negligence from a doctor and hospital who were more interested in getting their money than actually helping. Thanks for the great...
Read moreOur baby was born at Hobart Private not long ago and I must say that their professionalism is unparalleled. I have seen very few places where you can get spotless service. Since it was our first baby and we literally had no idea about what we were diving into, the staff at Hobart private made everything as simple as a baby’s laugh.
We stayed at Hobart private for 5 days and had to ask for help I don’t know how many times, but I must say that none of the staff member ever showed signs on discomfort. They looked after us as if we were their family members. In terms of overall cleanliness and maintenance i’ll give them 10/10. Housekeeping staff ensured that patients get fresh linen everyday and rooms well kept. Hospital offers a wide range of menu and several items to chose. The food quality, quantity and presentation was perfect plus for partners, you don’t have to ask for snacks the fridge is loaded with whole lot of stuff.
During our stay we interacted with so many staff members, I wish I can write their names but due to privacy concerns I will refrain. However, I want to give a huge shout out to Ms Erica, such an experienced and nice lady. She was there every time when we needed her along with the other staff members. People like her are an asset and real pride for an organization.
In terms of hospital paperwork, the front desk staff sorted out everything before hand, I left the hospital with just one piece of paper (how good is that).
A quick handy tip for parents: I know we all love our kids and can’t see them crying but trust me people at Hobart private share the same sentiments, please trust their professional opinions and let them do their work. It will surely make your stay...
