The 4 (!) food tours offered by Savannah Taste Experience attest to the city's standing as a foodie heaven: ⢠Port City Food Tour (the one I took), offered up to 4x daily, year-round, starting @ $76.95 pp: This 3-hour tour features 6 stops that tell the story of the groups that have made Savannah the vibrant, multi-cultural city it is today. The meeting place and first stop for the tour was Zunziās, home to the Conquistador, chosen as a finalist on the Travel Channelās Best Sandwich in America show. The Andaz Shrimp and Grits (pictured here) was sublime. The perfectly prepared shrimp were complemented by melted leeks and smoked pork belly served atop a bed of cheddar and blackened cream sauce grits. (This item is on the dinner menu for 22 Square, the hotelās restaurant, for $27.) ⢠First Squares Food Tour (3 hours), also offered up to 4x daily, year-round, starting @ $76.95pp: This tour ambles through some of Savannahās 22 historic squares uncovering secrets of Savannahās history on stops at 6 different restaurants and local food boutiques including a brewery, a British bakery, and a riverfront raw bar specializing in Low Country cuisine. ⢠Southern Fried Expectations Food Tour, offered Sunday ā Thursday, year-round, starting @ $62.95/pp: Wash down iconic dishes synonymous with āsouthernā (e.g., hushpuppies, fried chicken and biscuits) with a sample of one of the āworldās greatest daiquirisā on this 2-hour food tour. ⢠Walktails and Bar Bites Tour (2½ hours), offered Thursday ā Saturday, year-round, starting @ $86.95/pp: Itās legal to walk around with alcoholic beverages in Savannahās historic district (as long as theyāre in transparent, plastic cups). This adults-only happy hour tour starting at 4:00pm elevates Savannahās permissive āto go cupā law by making 4 stops for unique cocktail pairings. Every Savannah Taste Experience tour is limited to 14 participants ensuring lots of personal attention. But that also means they sell out quickly, so make your reservation(s) as far ahead as possible to get the tour and time that best fits...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe worst food tour I ever had. Okay, I only had two food tours before but this one is really disappointing compared to the other experiences.
We did the east side tour. I gave it one extra point for squeezing us into the tour at very short notice. But the tour guide was really bad at enlivening the whole experience. Her voice was not very loud and she tended to talk to a small fraction of the whole group, which made it difficult to hear her whole stories. The stories themselves were not engaging or interesting whatsoever. And she couldnāt keep the entertainment throughout the whole tour - a lot of the time we were just idling around her without any story or food from her, which was quite awkward. She did make an effort at the beginning of the tour to make all the participants interact with each other but it didnāt work out that well. I wouldnāt consider the whole tour guiding fun at all.
Then the food. Taste was okay but nothing impressive. I checked the websites of the places we visited that day, and my conclusion was that they failed to bring out the better items from their menus. Had several dishes focusing on southern specialties but nothing with a wow factor. The portion of the food was quite disappointing. Sandwiches were cut into I donāt know how many fractions before one fraction was handed out to each of us. All of us were quite hungry after the tour, which had six restaurant visits in total but still failed to get our stomach filled. Another thing I didnāt like was that during the tour some of the restaurant owners/workers kept on advertising to us to make future reservations at their places, which was a little annoying to me.
Because of the lack of entertainment from the tour guide and the lack of food quantity, I strongly suggest that you just go to all these places listed on their website by yourself and you can get better satisfaction at a...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe took the Tybee Island Bikes, Bites, and Brews tour on April the 11th, 2025. Not only was it one of the best 'food tours' we have ever taken, but it was one of the most fun. The food and drinks were very good, and there were great portions, plus we biked around the beautiful island of Tybee. The tour guide was a great guy, funny and knowledgeable about the Island and the best places for food and drinks. Our first stop was Huck-a-poo's Pizza where we sat on a shady deck and had a beer while we waited for the fantastic pizza. Then we stopped by the Marine center, the beach, and the lighthouse on our way to the restaurant Salt Island Fish and beer. Our guide ordered two pounds of incredibly fresh, local, white shrimp, served with cocktail sauce and butter-- we couldn't even eat it all with 8 people on the tour! Then we were off to Back River brewery where we did a beer tasting and cooled off. Let me tell you, I have had some craft brews in my time and EVERY ONE of their beers were fantastic!! I have never been able to say that before. If we go back to Tybee Island, Back River Brewery will be our FIRST stop for sure. The final stop was Zunzibar Restaurant where we had four orders of nachos and handmade dips with a yummy coconut cocktail. We sat on pick-nic tables under the big umbrellas and chowed down. It was such a fun time. The bike ride was not too difficult (I am mid-50's), and it wasn't too hot with the breeze off the ocean. It was a fantastic way to see Tybee Island and get the insider info about the BEST places to eat and drink. Best tour we did while in Savannah and maybe my favorite of all time. ...
