Placid Planet Bicycles — Local services in Town of North Elba

I came in because of noise from my rear hub, which the mechanic quickly identified as an issue with the bearings. I was quoted $60 for parts & labor to replace the bearings and was told they'd be able to fix within an hour because they had time (great!). I hadn't heard back in a few hours, so I gave them a call, and was told that the bearings turned out to be non-standard but they'd just figured it out, oh, and by the way they racked up $150 in labor (plus parts). Sometimes you quote something and then you take a look and it's something else - I get that. But if you quote $60 and it's gonna be an extra hundo, I expect a call asking me if I'm willing to drop that kind of money. If I knew it was going to be that much up front, I would have just taken a wheel off of one of my other bikes or considered straight up buying a new wheel. In the end, the bike worked, so there's an extra star for that.

My wife and I stopped in on Monday Aug 28th at around 2pm on the way to climb whiteface to stock up on gels and hydration mix. Picked up a few Gu gels and waffles and browsed the shop. Big selection of clothing on discount and if I had more time to try on some kit I would have bought a lot of it at those prices. When it came time to pay I went to the register at the front of the shop where an employee was having a conversation with a buddy of his, stood there like an idiot ready to check out for 2-3 minutes and was ignored. EVEN AFTER WE MADE EYE CONTACT!

Placid Planet is an excellent bike shop with staff who are very knowledgeable, helpful and aren't pushy. They have high quality Mountain, Road, and Tri bikes from some brands that are hard to find. They also have a huge selection of components, accessories and nutrition products. I recently had a bike fit done at Placid Planet and I was a bit skeptical at first, I rode for three hours right after the fit and for the first time ever I did not experience any pain during my ride.
