tl;dr Small distillery tasting room where you can get an inexpensive flight of liquors.
Was reading about craft distilleries being a unique anomaly within the antiquated Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control system and decided to seek one out. They are unique in that they can distill spirits, and then bottle and sell directly to the general public on premises. This being in contrast to all other spirits which must be sold at a Virginia ABC store.
In Chesapeake Bay Distillery's case, they have a small tasting room adjacent to their distilling and bottling warehouse. When I say small, there are probably a total of 10 seats or so. Their offerings include any of the products they distill by themselves, or as a tasting flight. As some of the other reviewers have noted, the $7 tasting flight, strictly in terms of price per ounce of alcohol, is a phenomenal value.
Being an alcohol purist, I personally did not find most of their offerings very appealing. My favorite two were probably the ghost pepper vodka and the herb whiskey. I wanted to try their regular whiskey but they were out. My least favorite was probably their tequila.
Why three stars when they are getting so many five star reviews? Maybe I am picky. They get a star for being unique for distilling spirits in contrast to the zillion craft brewery start-ups that have sprung up. Another for the woman who was working there that day. She was very friendly and helpful. And another star for the spirits themselves.
I admit that taste is highly subjective. But for my tastes, I think that they need to improve their products. Based on their current offerings I do not have any reason to go back. I appreciate their efforts to be creative with the spirits, but something more traditional that could stack up to a mainstream (and higher end) brand would be nice. I also think that they could improve their tasting room environment a little bit. Are they trying to have people just come through, try the flight and leave? Or are they trying to get people to hang out there for hours and order multiple things? I am leaning towards the former.
Overall, a fun place to swing by on a weekend. But if they are trying to attract repeat customers, I am not sure they...
Read moreI recently visited the Chesapeake Bay Distillery and it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The moment I walked in, I was greeted warmly by the staff, who were not only friendly but genuinely passionate about what they do. Their knowledge of the distilling process and enthusiasm for their craft made the visit all the more enjoyable.
The drinks? Absolutely incredible. Each vodka was smooth, flavorful, and expertly crafted. The bartenders were more than happy to recommend drinks based on my preferences, and each recommendation was spot on.
What really stood out was the atmosphere—it’s warm, inviting, and relaxed. It’s the kind of place where you can kick back with friends or strike up a conversation with the person next to you. The attention to detail in the décor creates a perfect blend of beachy charm and modern vibes.
If you’re looking for a place that delivers top-notch vodka, exceptional service, and a welcoming ambiance, Chesapeake Bay Distillery is it. I can’t wait to go back and bring more friends to...
Read moreI found myself at Chesapeake Bay Distillery 30 mins early for a business luncheon. While being the only person there; I sat at the bar after using their restroom. I was shortly greeted by Jordan and Christiana; both very down to Earth and sporting matching smiles. I expressed my reason for being there and was asked if it was my first time it was and we began chatting. While everyone began to show up; the bar was soon packed. It was a relaxed atmosphere, the drinks were truly tasty, and the service was on point. I left with a bottle of their vodka, a tee shirt, and a few new friends. I will be going back :)
I give them 5 out of 5 stars. Thank you for taking the time to...
