I really needed to edit my original review, as I got a (much longer) chance to play with the Poseidon Espresso. As I messed around with the grind and ratios, I finally hit the sweet spot with extraction. . And I had to lift my review from four stars to five. I can admit when I’m wrong. ;) . I can truly say, I pull an outstanding double espresso with Fathom Poseidon Espressos! I’m not even using a Breville Oracle Touch (as stated on the back of the jar), but that’s pretty close to a “god shot”!

Fathom Coffee is a great addition to the Virginia Beach coffee culture! I’ve been looking for a locally roasted coffee bean, that fits my pallet, every sense I got stateside from Italy. And, Fathom Coffee has hit the nail on the head, not just with proper roast and an ingenious method of off-gassing their beans, the flavor was spot on (with some grinder adjustments). The Fathom Poseidon Espresso, was very well balanced in terms of flavor. And the customer service at Fathom Coffee...absolutely wonderful.
No product has ever reached perfection. Anyone that believes that their product is perfect, is lying to themselves. So, here are a couple possible points for improvement.
Espresso is normally without oil. Oil in coffee affects the ability to achieve crema, which is important to most people (not all) in the espresso world. Crema adds to the visual appeal of espresso, but nothing really in terms of flavor, it is just foam, really. The more oil, the less crema. The Poseidon Espresso, contained small traces of oil, so it’s a little lighter on the crema.
On my normal espresso grind setting of “3.2” using an OXO grinder), Poseidon Espresso came out a little on the lighter side. But after going a little finer than normal, I got the punch to the tastebuds I was looking for. I would have liked to see a little bit more strength in flavor.
Overall, I’m very pleased with my purchase, and I will be a returning customer! I’m very excited to try more of the Bob Werby creations at Fathom Coffee! Thank you for a...
Read moreI don’t usually do reviews after just one visit, but I tried their cyclops coffee today and am SO glad I did! I usually hesitate to try the “fancy” brewed coffees because I find they’re generally overhyped and overpriced and somehow always acidic. Not this one! I can’t remember the beans they said they used today, but it’s one of the few coffees I have genuinely enjoyed drinking black. I was lucky they had just brewed it and got the perfect temperature fresh coffee. It was smooth with no acidity and was really pleasantly light but flavorful. As someone who almost always has to balance out badly brewed coffees with cream/milk I was really happy to enjoy this one black!
The ladies in there were kind as well and it seemed like a really well run, nice atmosphere, local place. We’re in VA beach once/month and I will certainly be making this a regular stop! I’m looking forward to trying some of the other items over time.
Additionally, they are actually open in the winter! A lot of spots here forget to update their Google hours and it’s annoying walking to a place that’s closed, so I was happy they were open...
Read moreI might have come in on an off day, because the reviews of this place are stellar, but our visit was eh. To start, the minute we walked in we were not met with any form of customer service. No greeting and the employees did not seem interested in helping us.
Both me and my friend ordered an iced matcha latte, she was not asked if she wanted a sweetener or any alternative milks, where as when I ordered, I was asked which flavoring I wanted and if I wanted any substitutions. But even with the sweetener, the matcha was bitter and clumpy.
The coffee, on the other hand, was pretty good. Another friend got the hazelnut coffee and it was excellent, which makes sense since this is a higher end coffee spot.
Another thing; I noticed they had a 10% teacher discount available which was lovely and kind of them to do. I would have loved to use it if the employee had applied it after I showed my ID! Mistakes happen and it was only 10% so I’m not too upset about that.
I can see that this place has a LOT of potential, so I will keep coming to try out...
