Bar Staff: Uninviting, unwelcoming, cold, unfriendly and just inhospitable in general. Last week my children visited me from Melbourne. We had visited over 20 hospitality venues from Margaret River, Fremantle, the casino, the Camfield (and more) over a 4 day period. Then on our last night, we were in town and walked past Durty Nelly’s. My daughter suggested we pop in for a drink. What an extremely disappointing end to our engagement within the hospitality over the last 4 days. Having never been in Durty Nelly’s before, I wasn’t sure if this was normal, or just a couple of bar staff having an “off” day. 2 out of the 3 bar staff we engaged with were nothing short of unwelcoming to say the least. No greeting, no conversation, no smile and then just put our drinks order on the bar without so much as a word. And when we ordered table service for our second round - same thing. The drinks were just put on the table without any comment at all or even a smile – he may as well have thrown them at us. Since when did bar staff become so rude? We had been to over 20 hospitality venues in the past 4 days and received excellent, warm and hospitable receptions at every location we visited – that was until we arrived at Durty Nelly’s. On the way out I went over to one of the bar staff that had “attitude”, and I told him that it wouldn’t hurt him to smile or converse with patrons. I told him smiling costs nothing. I was then followed out of the bar by another member of staff (whom I can only assume was the Manager), who proceeded to grill me about my comments about the unfriendly and unwelcoming bar staff. I think all he needed to do was stand on the same side of the bar as to where myself and visitors had been served, and watch how his staff greet, treat and communicate with their patrons. He might learn something with a little observation - rather than chasing me out the door to abuse me for giving them a few home truths. Unfortunately, it left a bit of a sour taste to have this happen on the last night out of a 4 day visit from my kids. Just remember: Smiling and communicating within the hospitality industry is not optional. Usually fair with security as understand their difficult job, however tonight my girlfriend wasn’t accepted for being unstable on her high heels despite her having VERY few drinks. Blokes on security refused myself water despite having a duty of care after I was allowed into the pub. The security supervisor claimed he didn’t have a duty of care for myself as he knew I was going to give the water to my partner, and couldn’t supply myself with water. The whole idea of giving water out is to help people out who are in need, I needed some water and so did her, so obviously I was going to supply her with half of it. The security guards also had the audacity to claim we were racist which is extremely unprofessional. It’s well and good to refuse people service that have had one too many drinks, but to single girls out for being unstable on their heels in unacceptable, and refusing customers for water is illegal.
