The service so far fantastic, glasses spotless, I was up sold a glass of bubbles, which were right up there!! Breads and X2 different butters only quip they were served in a dish that had seeds and other non edibles, if it's on the plate make sure you can eat it!! I went for the 5 course tasting menu paired with wine. 1st course, presentation 10/10 quality 9/10 I did find a small not bone, but quite tuff untrimmed part of the fish, but that is me just being hyper critical. Timing between courses are governed by how fast you drink your wine, no rushing and you can control your experience. The 1st wine paired very well with the fish and like explained, it was slightly salty as the grapes grown for the making of this wine are coastal, give that salty edge. 2nd course taking its time as the wine has been poured 6 minutes+ but the wine it's self is pure butter, can't match it with the food as it's yet to turn up!!!! But it is of quality, it's here, a sweet yet bitter creamy asparagus soup with a sous vide style egg, lose the white and just go with the yolk, it was a little unpleasant, the croutons that the soup gets poured over became soggy straight away, in my opinion should of been served on top and not within. The balance of flavours did go with the buttery wine very well. I am hour in and being so well looked after, with only X2 courses down, this is looking to be a very good experience for a relatively small price for what you are getting. What may seem negative jabs, are only my opinions and from someone else, could quite easily be the opposite, but I'm just being as honest as I can. 3rd wine is here a German riesling and informed it going to go perfect with my next course, fish......let us find out! Sea bass is the fish of the day, parsnip puree veg' and a caper sauce, awesome dish, clean flavours and the skin of the fish so crispy!! 10/10. Wine a little overpowering, don't get me wrong, a good wine but not with this. I personally would of paired a south african chenin blanc or something equally as crisp. Just came from the restroom and they are small but kept to a very high standard. A glass of red poured, my main must be imminent. Lamb ahoy!! The rack of lamb was pink and the shoulder was melt in the mouth, the wine on 1st taste wasn't for me..........until it was drank with the fatness of the shoulder, a really great pairing there, somebody put your hand up and taken credit for that one! Not a wine to be consumed on its own though, unless you still have that greasy mouth feel from the food. That course 10/10. So here we are, final chapter, I'm not a sweet eater, but in for a penny in for a pound!!! Well I devoured that cheesecake, the wine was sweeter than the dessert itself which gave the whole dish a really good twist. A great venue, great staff and overall great food. Should you come....yes, if you are not in Czech book some flights just...
Read moreI find this a difficult restaurant to review, as I'm perhaps unfairly also comparing it to another Michelin Guide venue that I visited the evening before (Bockem), and it didn't reach nearly the same heights if I'm being polite yet honest.
The setting is attractive and the service was great. Despite travelling alone due to work, it felt comfortable to dine here. However, there is a trade-off when you're not sitting with a partner or friend and you're selecting a tasting menu in any restaurant – it's a bit intense in terms of how much knowledge is being transmitted at you. I was left feeling a little ignorant about wines/ingredients etc, and I'm far from un-travelled or a Philistine. This undoubtedly wasn't the intention, but it was not a very relaxing experience. It also made me wonder if the staff are used to wealthy/demanding customers. I'm neither, in all honesty, and many readers with a similar background might agree...this can make service in some restaurant seem quite uncomfortable/performative.
The tasting menu was quite inconsistent. There were two venison dishes which were pleasant, although the foie gras wasn't to my liking. The soup was intensely flavoured and interesting. The fish dish was cooked well and had a lovely sauce but poorly seasoned vegetables. The walnut dessert was delicious. The cheeseboard was excellent, and the fruit and nut bread was wonderful, and I appreciated the extra portion of that + some customisation on which cheeses I wanted. There was a sprinkling of additional complimentary dishes throughout the meal. These were sadly not particularly memorable nor inventive.
The red wine I selected was fine, but nothing special. The sparkling wine was good, and had just the right amount of acidity.
All in all, nothing deserved a complaint in the moment, but I can't shake the feeling that much of my experience felt similar to what restaurants back in London were offering in c.2005-2010. Lots of little gels and sauces dotted on white plates, formal service, and perhaps an overly serious approach to what is classic and what is not. Most other reviews appear to disagree with me, which just shows how subjective dining experiences are!
I'd genuinely recommend booking a table here over arriving in Prague with no plan and walking into a tourist trap. You'll experience a range of Czech and French style dishes, cooked well. You'll also receive attentive service in pleasant surroundings. I can't fault the basic elements, but my feedback is that it may need to refresh its...
Read moreWhen we first entered the restaurant, I found myself to be a bit disappointed by the light atmosphere in the yard. The setting seemed comparatively dull, though that may be a highly subjective impression. However, the charming waiters soon made up for it and made sure we were comfortable at all times! The service is simply exceptional, even for a restaurant of this kind. Although I am not very knowledgeable about different wines, the wine menu seemed very interesting and the waiter provided helpful insight as to what wine to pair with what dish. But let's get to what matters most: the food and sadly there's not a lot to say about it, because I can't find the words. It was simply amazing: from the way each dish was displayed to the taste, everything was just perfect, so much so that I liked a creame sauce made out of sweet potato which I usually dislike. Don't worry about which dish to pick, I'm certain their all great in their own way. But this comes with a huge downside: The Grand Cru will lift your expectations for what a dining experience can be to a point where it will be hard to enjoy a "normal" restaurant afterwards. That being said I have nothing but yearning for the amazing tastes I got to experience here and wish the...
